Weather in Vatican and best time to go
The Vatican is located in the middle of Rome, so the weather here is the same as in the Italian capital.
You can expect a typical Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild winters.
But it's not just about the weather. When planning a visit to the Vatican, queues, church festivals or the presence of the Pope are often more important than the temperature itself.
Detailed monthly statistics can be found in the separate guide Weather in Rome, which also applies to the Vatican.

When to go to Vatican
The Vatican is a year-round destination because most of the activities take place inside.
Still, I personally have my favorite seasons simply because visiting the Vatican is just part of being in Rome.
March to May
The best period for me.
The temperatures are pleasant for long walks and the queues have not yet reached summer extremes. On the other hand, spring is when Easter falls, when the Vatican tends to be the busiest of the year.
- ✅ Pleasant weather
- ✅ Longer days
- ❌ Easter means huge crowds
June to August
The hottest time of the year. Daytime temperatures routinely exceed 30°C and waiting in queues to enter the basilica or museums can be very uncomfortable. July and August are also among the driest months of the year.
- ✅ The longest days
- ✅ Minimum rain
- ❌ Extreme heat
- ❌ Biggest crowds of tourists
September and October
For many travellers, the best combination of weather and visitor numbers.
The summer heat is gradually receding, but you can still expect temperatures in the 20-30°C range. In October, the likelihood of rain starts to increase.
- ✅ Pleasant temperatures
- ✅ Fewer tourists than in summer
- ✅ Ideal for visiting the basilica and museums
November to February
The quietest time of the year.
The weather tends to be changeable and November is one of the rainiest months. On the other hand, it is in winter that the queues to the main sights are shortest.
- ✅ Smallest crowds
- ✅ Shorter waits
- ❌ Cooler weather
- ❌ Higher chance of rain
Easter at the Vatican
If you want to experience the world's most famous religious celebration, Easter is unique.
This is when the most important services are held in St Peter's Square and tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world visit the Vatican.
But count on this:
- accommodation can be more expensive
- museum bookings disappear very quickly
- queues are considerably longer than during a normal year

Christmas at the Vatican
The second highlight of the year is Christmas.
Every year a huge Christmas tree and nativity scene are erected in the square, while the Basilica hosts the most important Christmas services of the Catholic Church.
The atmosphere is unique, but as at Easter, expect a higher attendance.
