Getting around Vatican
Unlike Rome, you don't take the metro, buses or trams in Vatican City.
The whole country covers an area of just 0.44 km² and all the main sights are within walking distance.
For most visitors, transport in Vatican City simply means walking.

How far are the various monuments?
Approximate walking distances:
| Directions | Time |
|---|---|
| St. Peter's Square → St. Peter's Basilica | 1 min |
| Basilica → Vatican Post Office | 2 min |
| St. Peter's Square → Vatican Museums | 15 min |
| Vatican Museums → St. Peter's Basilica | 20 min |
It is the distance between the basilica and the museums that tends to surprise many visitors. Although they are in the same country, the entrances are on opposite sides of the Vatican walls and you have to pass through Rome (i.e. Italy).
Is it possible to drive through the Vatican?
For ordinary visitors, no.
Most of the area is not open to the public and car traffic serves mainly:
- Vatican staff.
- diplomatic vehicles
- supplies
- security forces
Tourists move around the Vatican exclusively on foot.
