Lagoa do Capitão
A small lake at an altitude of over 800 metres above sea level is a popular destination on a trip through the central mountainous part of the island of Pico.
Lagoa do Capitão is a haven for many species of birds and is surrounded by the endemic vegetation of Macaronesia as well as numerous pastures.
The 10 best places to stay on Pico
If you’re lucky enough to catch one of the rare clear days, you’ll be able to take breathtaking photos of Mount Pico in the background from this lagoon.
A tarmac road leads right up to the lake, ending in a spacious car park. The turn-off from the main road, the ‘Estrada Longitudinal’, is clearly signposted and is only about 300 metres long.
There is also a signposted footpath leading from the lake down to the coast and the town of São Roque do Pico.
