The picturesque little town of Prainha on the north coast leads a peaceful existence, surrounded by pastures and lava vineyards.

It is the only place on the whole island of Pico to offer a small sandy beach with relatively easy access to the water.

Beach facilities

Prainha Beach is more of an interesting tourist attraction than an actual place for swimming. The beach itself is only about 20 metres long and there are no proper facilities in the vicinity. There are no sun lounger hire services and no restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

What’s more, the Atlantic Ocean is quite cold all year round, so Prainha is the ideal spot for a quick dip.

The windmill and the church

It’s also well worth stopping off in the little town of Prainha to see the beautiful windmill on the coast and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda in the centre of the village.
