Getting to Malacca

Most travellers head to Malacca by long-distance buses. There are frequent services from Kuala Lumpur, but direct services also run to Singapore and other Malaysian cities.
The city also has a small international airport Malacca MKZ and there are regular ferries from Indonesia.
There is no railway to Malacca and the nearest train station is Tampin, more than 40 km away.

By bus
The main bus station , Melaka Sentral, is located on the northern outskirts of the city centre about 4.5 km from the historic centre and Dutch Square.
To find out how to get from the bus station to the centre, see the Transport chapter.
All regular long-distance buses leave from this station.
The station is equipped with a large number of shops, mini-markets (such as Family Mart and 7-Eleven) and eateries.
Where to buy tickets?
You can buy tickets for Malaysia's long-distance buses just before departure from vending machines or at the ticket office. At the Malacca bus station, you can pay with cash and card, but at the main bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur, for example, you can only pay with cash.
On very frequent routes (such as to Kuala Lumpur) you may find it more convenient to buy your ticket directly at the bus station, as you will not be restricted by departure time.
However, it may happen that the nearest connection is already sold out and if you are travelling from Melaka on a less frequented line, we definitely recommend buying tickets online at least 1-2 days in advance.
There are several bus booking websites in Malaysia that work without any problems.
- 12go.asia (we use this site most often, it works in many countries in Southeast Asia for buses, boats and trains)
- easybook.com
- redbus.com
