Getting around Malacca

Malacca

Historical sights and attractions are compactly located within the centre, where you can get around on foot.

For more distant places such as Selat Melaka Mosque, the bus station or the airport, use the ubiquitous Grab mobile app or classic taxis.

There are also city buses running around Malacca, which you can use especially when travelling to the long-distance bus station.

On foot

Walking is the best and effectively the only way to get around the historic centre, from Chinatown, through Melaka River Walk and up St. Paul's Hill.

You can walk through downtown Malacca in about 20-30 minutes.

Taxi / Grab

The easiest way to get around for longer distances is the Grab mobile app. Cars are ubiquitous and you usually won't wait more than 5 minutes after placing your order.

Grab is very cheap and an average ride around Malacca won't cost you more than 7 myr.

How much we paid for Grab on our trips:

Regular taxis are usually widely available at the bus station, at hotels or along the main streets in the centre.

However, unlike the Grab, taxis can only be paid in cash and the price is usually up to 30-50% higher than the Grab.

City buses

Public transport is provided by BAS MY's pink buses.

The routes are designed primarily for local use and are only worthwhile from a tourist point of view when travelling between the centre and the bus station.

Line map and timetables

All city bus routes start at the main bus station, Melaka Sentral, and besides Malacca itself, they also serve nearby towns such as Tampin, Pantai Pengkalan Balak and Batang Melaka.

A map of the total network of lines and individual routes is available here: bas.my.

The frequency of individual routes is usually 30 minutes or 60 minutes and buses run from 6:00am to 10:20pm.

Fares and tickets

On Bas My buses in Melaka you cannot pay with your own credit card or even with a Touch n' Go transport card.

You can only pay in exact cash.

If you don't have exact cash, you will put a higher amount in the driver's cash box, but you will not be refunded.

The price for 1 ride is 1,40 myr. Most tourists don't have that kind of small coin, though, so one ride will usually cost you 2 myr or 1,50 myr.
