Malacca in a nutshell

Malacca

Malacca (sometimes spelled Melaka) is the oldest historic city in Malaysia and formerly a very important port on the Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

Because of its strategic location, Malacca has historically gone through many difficult periods, battles and great power rivalries. Over time, the city has been colonised by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British.

To this day, Malacca has retained its historic character of romantic old houses spread along the water channel and is one of the most popular tourist spots in Malaysia.

Its location makes it an ideal place for a leisurely day trip from Kuala Lumpur.

Incidentally, construction is currently underway on a huge modern marina just outside of Malacca.
