Chinatown

The oldest Chinatown in Malaysia is located in Malacca within the UNESCO-listed historic centre.
The history of the local Chinatown dates back to the 1400s during the Ming Dynasty, when large numbers of immigrants flocked to the area due to the numerous trade opportunities associated with shipping.
Get lost in the narrow streets
Chinatown has gradually grown around three main streets, the most famous of which is Jonker Walk.
It covers an area of about 20 hectares, with narrow streets packed with cafes and traditional Chinese restaurants.
Apart from the very busy Jonker Street, Chinatown has many quiet streets with a great authentic atmosphere, which is a big difference from, for example, the touristy Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur.
Sights and attractions
Within the boundaries of Chinatown, we visited several attractions that we would recommend to you as well:
- Kampung Hulu Mosque - the oldest mosque in the city with a unique pagoda-shaped minaret.
- Cheng Hoon Teng Temple - the largest Chinese temple in Malacca
- Kampung Kling Mosque - an 18th century mosque combining Islamic and Hindu architectural styles
- Hang Jebat Mausoleum - the tomb of one of Malaysia's greatest historical heroes
Accommodation in Chinatown
While in most other cities Chinatowns are considered to be more of an inferior neighbourhood with questionable hotels, in Malacca it is one of the main tourist attractions and you will find several well rated local hotels.
We would recommend these accommodations:
- Gingerflower Boutique Hotel *** - a well maintained hotel on one of the main streets with rates from 45 usd per night
- Ola Hostel - a top rated budget hostel with shared bathrooms and prices from 30 usd per night
- Timez Hotel Melaka *** - a local modern hotel just steps away from busy Jonker Street with rates from 90 usd per night
