Jonker Walk

Jonker Walk

Jonker Street, more commonly known as Jonker Walk, is the main street of Chinatown, which is the largest district of old Malacca.

This bustling street is filled with local shops and eateries, as well as touristy overpriced restaurants and souvenir shops.

The official name of Jonker Street is Jalan Hang Jebat and the entire street is less than 500 metres long.

What to see and experience on Jonker Walk?

Jonker Walk isn't for everyone and I for one didn't really like this famous place.

It's definitely the most touristy area of Malacca and even in the middle of the day when it should be the least crowded, the street was quite crowded.

Some of the restaurants and street eateries look great, others look more like tourist traps.

But Jonker Street has a better atmosphere in the evening after dark, when there are more people, but also more opportunities to have fun. Bars and clubs open and there are night markets on Fridays and Saturdays.

Jonker Street starts at the river and the famous Tan Kim Seng Bridge, near which you'll find places like the local branch of the Hard Rock Café.

Hotels on Jonker Street

Stay at Jonker Walk if you love the nightlife and prefer local hotels.

For example, we'd recommend these well-reviewed accommodations:

  • Jonker Boutique Hotel *** - you'll find a hotel with pretty colonial-style interiors at the quieter end of the street.
  • La Mamasita Hostel - very cheap accommodation with private rooms but shared bathroom in the corridor
