Why is Akihabara famous?
For a long time, the district was known as Akihabara Electric Town. It got that name after World War II, when it became one of Tokyo's main districts with electronics stores.
To this day, you can still find many electronics shops in Akihabara, mainly for home appliances, but nowadays Akihabara is mainly known as the so-called "Akihabara". otaku town.
This term refers to "geeks", people with a narrow focus or interest.
And Akihabara is today the centre of Japanese pop culture, anime, manga and gaming.
Most anime or manga shops can be found around Akihabara Station and along Chuo Street.
Girls in maid costumes on the streets
A famous hallmark of Akihabara is the huge number of young ladies standing in maid or anime costumes along the streets.
Many tourists mistakenly believe that these are prostitutes, but in fact they are employees of cafes with anime or manga decorations, of which you will find a huge number in Akihabara.
Arcade arcades
Akihabara is famous for its multi-storey dome of arcade games, the most famous of which is the Taito Station Games chain, where you can entertain yourself for hours.
Individual games here are always priced at 100 jpy each, and you can often pay by card.
Geek paradise or tourist trap? Worth a visit?
If you have time in Tokyo, I definitely recommend a visit here. It's a strange, sometimes even bizarre place with atmosphere. Personally, though, I liked the Shinjuku district better, which has a bit of a similar vibe.
So is it worth a visit?
✅ Yes, if:
- you want to experience something unique
- you love anime and arcade games
- you enjoy the neon district at night
- 👉 My tip: Akihabara has the best atmosphere after dark
❌ Not if:
- you like traditional places
- you avoid crowds
- anime or gaming culture doesn't mean anything to you
Akihabara Hotels
Stay in Akihabara if you love nightlife and hustle and bustle.
The Shinjuku district is even livelier, but hotel prices are a bit higher there.
I would recommend these hotels:
- remm Akihabara *** - a well-known Japanese chain, a hotel with great ratings and good prices right by Akihabara Station
- Via Inn Akihabara *** - very cheap and well rated hotel with small but clean rooms 2 minutes walk from Akihabara station
My itinerary with a visit to Akihabara
I headed to Akihabara on my 1st day in Tokyo. I arrived at Haneda Airport in the morning and headed to drop off my luggage at a capsule hotel near Ueno Station.
I spent the afternoon and early afternoon at Ueno Park.
In the early evening, I walked to Akihabara where I spent the whole evening.
Akihabara and Ueno is the perfect combination for a half-day program.
