Caracalla Spa
Caracalla's baths surprised me more than most of the more famous sights.
In photos, they often look like just another ruin. In reality, though, it's their size that has the biggest wow effect. Once you're standing inside, it only dawns on you how incredibly monumental ancient Rome really was.
And another huge plus? Compared to the Colosseum or the Roman Forum, it's significantly less crowded.
The Baths of Caracalla were probably built around 212 AD.
What surprised me the most
The surprisingly well-preserved remains and the huge space inside the former baths.
- The gigantic walls
- high arches
- huge open halls
One suddenly realises that this was not "just a bath" but the entire social centre of ancient Rome.
In its day, thousands of people could come here every day.
The complex included hot baths, cold pools, saunas, gardens, sports facilities, libraries.
It wasn't just about bathing. It was a place of relaxation, socialising and everyday life.
The atmosphere compared to other monuments
This was the biggest difference for me compared to the centre:
- fewer tourist groups
- more space
- no extreme chaos
It makes you enjoy the place a lot more.
