Forum Romanum

Forum Romanum

Forum Romanum is not just another archaeological site. This was the real centre of ancient Rome - a place of political speeches, triumphal processions, trials and everyday public life.

Today, it is a huge area between the Colosseum and the Piazza Venezia, full of ruins, temples and ancient roads.

Which is why a first visit can be a little chaotic. It's not one particular monument, but a whole "city within a city".

What to expect and how to approach your visit?

This is important to know in advance.

The Forum Romanum today is not a "preserved forum". It's a vast archaeological area full of ruins, building foundations, columns and roads.

That's why I recommend:

  • not to come here in a hurry
  • Ideally, find out the main sites beforehand.

How long does it take to visit?

  • 45 minutes - a very quick walk across the site
  • 90-120 minutes - a detailed visit to all parts including a rest on the quiet Palatine hill

Upon entry:

  • you will go through a security check
  • I recommend carrying only a small backpack
  • in summer, expect minimal shade and high heat

👉 Take:

  • water
  • headgear
  • comfortable shoes

This is not a "quick city sightseeing", but a rather challenging walk.

The most interesting places in Fora Romana

  • Arch of Septimus Severus and Arch of Titus - these triumphal arches are the only structures that have survived virtually unscathed since their construction around 203
  • Temple of Saturn - probably the oldest Roman temple, the ruins of which, in the form of the columns of the façade, are one of the most visible monuments in the Forum Romano
  • Temple of Concordia and Temple of Vespasian - a pair of ancient temples, of which only the ruins of a few columns remain, are located at the very western end of the Forum just below the Capitol
  • Temple of Antoninus and Faustina - the ruins of the original ancient temple in the form of columns on the front are complemented by the surviving 7th or 8th century church of San Lorenzo in Miranda
  • Basilica of Maxentius - this large building was one of the last structures before the decline of Rome to recall the grandeur of the Roman Empire
  • Via Sacra - the main avenue that crossed the Forum Romanum from the Colosseum to the Capitol

Admission price: is it possible to buy a ticket on the spot?

Yes, unlike the neighbouring Colosseum, it is not necessary to buy a ticket for the Forum Romana + the Palatine for a specific time.

Therefore, it is also not necessarily necessary to buy tickets online in advance.

However, the Forum Romanum shares a ticket with the Coliseum - and slots for the Coliseum tend to sell out quickly. So if you are planning to visit the Colosseum along with the Forum Romanum, I definitely recommend booking online.

Online booking

Online booking is done through the official website ticketing.colosseo.it.

I recommend to book:

  • at least 1-2 weeks in advance during the season
  • ideally as soon as possible after confirming the travel dates

💡 my experience: when booking a few days in advance, there were often only less attractive times or more expensive ticket options left - in the case of the Colosseum.

You can enter the Forum Romana at any time.

But of course you have a slight advantage with an online ticket to the Fora Romana: you save 10-15 minutes in the queue to buy tickets.

Tickets on the spot

The ticket offices for the Forum Romanum + Colosseum are located:

  • by the Colosseum (opposite the main entrance)
  • at the Fora Romana, roughly in the middle of Via dei Fori Imperiali

If you are only planning a visit to the Fora Romana + Palatina, there is no need to deal with time slots: you can enter at any time.

I personally bought my tickets on the spot. I was there shortly after noon during late April and spent about 15 minutes in line.

There are a large variety of tickets to choose from.

How did I see the Forum Romaum for free?

If you're not an archaeological enthusiast but just need a quick look at the Forum Romanum, you can see enough of the site for free from two locations.

The first is the main street, Via dei Fori Imperiali, where the ticket offices are. From here, however, you'll only see hints of the Forum Romana.

The best spot is definitely Via del Campidoglio on the Capitol.

From here:

  • you can see the whole forum from above
  • you'll get a much better idea of its size
  • and at the same time take the best photos

What I needed to know in advance

  • Toilets: yes, on the premises
  • drinking water: fountains in several parts of the site
  • refreshments: there is no restaurant or café inside the complex
  • shade: minimum outside, but there is plenty of indoor exposure

Would I go here again?

The Forum Romanum is iconic, and while I'm not a total sightseer, I would go here again in a heartbeat.

What did I like?

  • ✅ History breathes on you
  • ✅ Huge grounds that you can walk through at your own pace
  • ✅ The beautiful and much quieter Palatine Hill
  • ✅ The best view of the Colosseum
  • ✅ No need to book a ticket in advance

What was my problem?

  • ❌ Lots of people
  • ❌ Little shade
