Parade Ground in central Hong Kong is not a standalone attraction. It is the main courtyard of Tai Kwun – the site of the former police station, courthouse and Victoria Prison.

We stopped mainly at this open square.

Police ceremonies and celebrations used to be held here; today it serves as a public space and an occasional venue for cultural events. If you simply walk through the courtyard, you will only see part of the former police complex.

What can you see at Tai Kwun?

The entire historic site is located on Hollywood Road in the Central district. You can tailor your visit to suit how much time you have:

  • Parade Ground: a large courtyard between the buildings of the original police station. A short walk and a quick stop here will take about 20–30 minutes.
  • The former prison and historical exhibitions: if you want to gain a better understanding of the site, continue further into the complex to the former prison buildings and exhibitions about its history.
  • Contemporary art and restaurants: Tai Kwun now also functions as a cultural centre. The programme of exhibitions and events varies.

Admission and opening hours

  • Entry to the complex, including the Parade Ground: free.
  • Open: daily 8.00–23.00.
  • Exhibitions: historical exhibitions usually 11:00–19:00; the JC Contemporary gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–19:00. Admission is charged for selected events and exhibitions.

You can find the current programme and admission conditions on the official Tai Kwun website.

How to get to Tai Kwun?

The complex is located at 10 Hollywood Road. From Central MTR station, take Exit D1 and continue to the Central–Mid-Levels escalator system. You can enter Tai Kwun directly via the footbridge.

Buses 12, 12M, 13 and 26 also stop in the vicinity. For further information on getting around the city, see the section on Transport in Hong Kong.

You can combine your visit with a short walk to Graham Street Wall.

Where to stay nearby?

Accommodation in Central is ideal if you want to walk from Tai Kwun to the surrounding streets of SoHo and the waterfront.
