Singapore during transfer: What you can do in 5, 8 or 24 hours

Garden Rhapsody

Have a few hours between flights and wondering if it makes sense to leave the airport? In Singapore, yes.

It's one of the few transfer hubs in the world where even a short layover can turn into a full-fledged experience.

From my own experience: even at about 8 hours, I managed the hub, the food and the iconic views without stress.

And calmly even late in the evening. Singapore is a very safe city even during the night and beautifully lit up after dark.

Is it worth leaving the airport when changing planes in Singapore?

Yes, if:

  • you have at least 5-6 hours between flights
  • you want to see a modern and very clean Asian city
  • you are arriving in the evening, Singapore may be even better at night than during the day

❌ More likely not if:

  • you have less than 5 hours
  • you are dealing with visas or don't want to deal with airport baggage storage
  • you are stressed about time and transfers

💡 Alternative:
Stay at the airport - Jewel Changi Airport is an attraction in itself (and fine for 3-4 hours).

I would definitely go to the city. Singapore has a wonderfully compact city centre, so you can see all the top attractions in a short time too.

How much time do you need to leave the airport?

This is logically the most common and of course the most important question.

Reality from practice:

  • the journey from the plane to passport control: 15-20 minutes
  • passport control: 5-10 minutes
  • journey to the metro: 10-30 minutes depending on the terminal
  • journey to the city centre: approx. 30 minutes
  • return + reserve: at least 2 hours before departure

👉 Minimum for the trip: 5-6 hours
👉 Ideal: 8+ hours

How difficult is the transfer from the airport to the city?

Very easy.

There's an MRT metro directly to the airport, and taxis or the popular Asian app Grab also work well in Singapore.

  • 🚇 Subway (MRT): about 30-40 minutes
    • very easy to pay with your own card
  • 🚕 Grab/taxi: approx. 20-30 minutes

Downtown Singapore is relatively close to the airport - and transport works extremely reliably.

What to do on a short layover (5-7 hours)

If you only have a few hours, there's no point ticking off the list of attractions one by one.

My recommendation:

Focus on just one area - for me, Marina Bay would work ideally.

  • View of the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel
  • Merlion Park
  • A short walk for the beautiful promenade around the bay
  • a quick peek at Gardens by the Bay if you have time

💡Alternativeif you're not into iconic buildings:
A walk around Chinatown and a visit to a hawker centre with cheap local food.

What you can do in 8-12 hours (ideal transfer)

This is the sweet spot. In this amount of time, you'll have already hit multiple downtown spots and easily hit all the major attractions.

Realistically, you can do it without stress and a big rush:

  • Marina Bay
  • Gardens by the Bay
  • food at the hawker centre (e.g. Lau Pa Sat a short walk away)

The whole area is beautifully walkable.

Just take the metro or a taxi from/to the airport and you don't have to deal with anything at all. Singapore is a great place for pedestrians and you can walk the whole area around Marina Bay within an hour.

24 hours in Singapore on a layover

It's no longer a layover here, but a full mini-trip where you can easily catch everything downtown + the orchid garden, for example.

It depends on what you're most attracted to and enjoy.

  • Evening: Marina Bay + light show + Gardens by the Bay
  • night: downtown hotel

  • Morning: Chinatown or Kampong Glam
  • if you have a few extra hours, you can still do some shopping on Orchard Road or visit the botanical gardens

What to do when changing in the evening or at night

A lot of people underestimate this.

If you're arriving in the evening, it definitely makes sense to go downtown - Singapore is an extremely photogenic city after dark.

What I would do:

  • A quick move to the Marina Bay area
  • if you're there at the right time, visit both the Spectra and Garden Rhapsody light shows
    • which is better? Read my opinion in the article What to do in Singapore
  • Eat at a hawker centre (they are often open 24/7)

👉 Spectra - Marina Bay Sands

  • Free
  • right at Marina Bay Sands
  • every day at 20:00 and 21:00, plus 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays

👉 Garden Rhapsody - Gardens by the Bay

  • light show on "supertrees"
  • very strong atmosphere
  • every day at 19:45 and 20:45

Does it make sense to go to Sentosa when transferring?

Short answer: mostly no.

Sentosa is more of a standalone trip than a quick stopover.

  • Approximately 75 minutes from the airport.
  • Ideal time: at least half a day, but most people go to Sentosa for a full day or even a full stay

When does it make sense?

  • If you have 24 hours or more
  • you want beaches or attractions
  • you are planning Universal Studios Singapore

If it was my first time in Singapore, I would personally skip Sentosa altogether. It's just an island with theme parks and beaches, but definitely not authentic Singapore.

What to do when connecting directly at Changi Airport

Changi Airport itself is one of the places to see in Singapore.

It has been voted the best airport in the world several times and I can't help but agree.

You can entertain yourself for hours

  • Jewel Changi Airport - a business centre with a huge rooftop waterfall, jungle and several floors of shops and restaurants
  • Rain Vortex - that's what they call the rooftop waterfall. There's also a light show at 8pm and 9pm daily.
  • Gardens - at Jewel
  • Wonderfall - a huge digital waterfall in the public area of Terminal 2

Does Singapore make sense when you change planes?

Yes - and maybe more than you think.

  • The centre is close
  • transport works well and reliably
  • even a few hours will give you the feeling that you've gotten to know Singapore, as the centre is compact and small

👉 And if you arrive in the evening, you'll experience an extra impressive light show.

What to do before you fly (it will save you time)

I always secure my eSIM before I fly to a destination and find out if I'll need to withdraw money from an ATM or not.

Internet on mobile

No data in Singapore:

  • Grab doesn't work (fastest traffic)
  • navigation does not work
  • not sure where to go based on our map of places to see

How to pay (and what not to pay)

The good news: you hardly need cash.

  • You can use your card to pay almost everywhere, including subway or bus fares
  • small businesses and food courts work
  • for more details on prices and card payments in Singapore

💡 Unless you have a card with a good rate, it makes sense to have something like Revolut - but for a few hours in Singapore, it's not a necessity.
