Mešita Ortaköy

Ortakoy, Istanbul, Turkey

The Ortaköy Mosque is much smaller and less impressive than other mosques in Istanbul, but you should still go there. It is right on the Bosphorus and has beautiful views of the sea and the great Bosphorus Bridge.

You'll only need a few minutes to visit the interior of the mosque, but make sure to set aside plenty of time to walk around the area and along the Bosphorus.

A series of disasters

Today's Ortaköy Mosque was built relatively recently. Another mosque used to stand on its site, but it was destroyed. In the 19th century, the present mosque was built here, but its dome collapsed a few years later and eventually the mosque burned down. However, after many years of reconstruction, it is once again in perfect condition for visitors to admire.

Admission and opening hours

Entrance to the mosque is free. Both men and women should keep their legs and arms covered when entering the mosque, and women will need a headscarf to cover their hair.

You can visit the mosque at any time outside of prayer time (when it is for worshippers only) and except on Fridays, the day of major Muslim prayers.
