Taksim is a place you'll almost certainly pass through - and it may not exactly wow you in itself. It's not a pretty square in the classic sense.

It's more of a transport hub, a gateway to modern Istanbul and a starting point for an evening out.

Being one of the few large empty spaces in central Istanbul, it is also a frequent venue for celebrations or demonstrations.

What is Taksim Square

Taksim is the main square of the modern part of Istanbul in the European district of Beyoğlu. Here you will find the Republic Memorial, the entrance to the metro, bus hubs and the start of the pedestrianised Istiklal Avenue.

There is a nice park in the middle of the square and the Taksim Mosque is located on the southern edge.

Personally, I wouldn't completely plan ahead for a visit to Taksim Square. You will probably visit it anyway and if you accidentally skip the square, nothing will happen at all.

The main reason most tourists visit Taksim Square after all is the important metro station and especially the famous Istiklal pedestrian and shopping street that leads to the Galata Tower.

The famous red historical Taksim - Tünel tram also runs along this street.

Is Taksim safe?

Yes, but with a few reservations.

  • during the day without any problems
  • In the evening, lively but safe
  • watch out for pickpockets in the crowd

I would definitely avoid Taksim if there is a demonstration or large gathering of people. There's a risk of trouble with the police.

How much time to allow

  • The square itself: 10-20 minutes
  • with Istiklal Avenue: 1 hour

Where to stay near Taksim - does it make sense?

Yes, but it depends on the style of travel.

Disadvantages:

  • Noise
  • less "authentic" Istanbul
