What is the climate like in Istanbul (and why is it different from the rest of Turkey)?

Istanbul does not have a ‘classic Mediterranean climate’, as many people think. It lies between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, which means:

• more humidity than in Antalya, for example
• more frequent winds (especially around the Bosphorus)
• rapid changes in the weather throughout the day

The result? Istanbul is cooler, windier and rainier than most people expect.

What to expect

1️⃣ Winds from the Bosphorus
A temperature of 10 °C can feel like 5 °C. In winter, this is your biggest enemy.

Sun in the morning, rain in the afternoon, wind in the evening. This is normal, especially outside the summer months.

Winter weather (December – February)

Winter in Istanbul is not a ‘pleasant city winter’. It’s rather harsh.

Temperatures range from around 10–22 °C, but it can feel quite different.

Summer weather (June – August)

Summer is stable, but not always pleasant.

It’s not so much about extreme heat as the fact that the city heats up between the buildings and the air barely moves away from the coast.

Autumn weather (September–November)

Autumn is the best time to visit.

• October: ideal (20–25 °C)
• November: it starts to get a bit damp

The rain returns, but mostly in the form of showers.
