Weather in Istanbul and best time to go

Istanbul

Istanbul is tricky in that way. Most articles will tell you "subtropical climate, warm, occasional rain" - but the reality is a bit different.

Compared to the rest of Turkey, Istanbul gets frequent and quite unexpected rain, and in winter it can even snow.

What's the climate like in Istanbul (and why it's different from elsewhere in Turkey)

Istanbul doesn't lie in the "classic Mediterranean climate" as many people think. It lies between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, which means:

  • more humidity than, say, Antalya.
  • more frequent wind (especially around the Bosphorus)
  • rapid weather changes during the day

The result? Istanbul is colder, windier and rainier than most people expect.

💡 Practically: if you've been to Greece or the south of Turkey, Istanbul is on a whole different level - the climate here is much more like central or western European cities.

What to prepare for

1️⃣ Wind from the Bosphorus
A temperature of 10°C can feel like 5°C. In winter, it's the biggest enemy.

2️⃣ Weather variability
Sun in the morning, rain in the afternoon, wind in the evening. Normal condition, especially outside summer.

3️⃣ Humidity
Increases sensible temperatures in summer, decreases in winter.

Temperatures throughout the year - reality vs. expectations

Seasons Real feeling
Winter Cold, wet, windy
Spring Often sunny but windy
Summer Hot + humid
Autumn Most erratic

Winter weather (December - February)

Winter in Istanbul is not a "pleasant urban winter". It's rather raw.

  • Temperatures.
  • frequent rain, sometimes snow
  • strong wind from the sea

Snow appears almost every year, but usually only for a few days. When it comes, the city slows down - and ironically, it's one of the most photogenic moments.

💡 What to expect in practice: long walks are not ideal, but mosques, museums and hammams make the most sense in winter.

Weather in spring (March - May)

Spring is quite a tricky time, but the sun often shines.

  • March: still cold + rain
  • April: a mix of everything (sun, wind, showers)
  • May: ideal urban weather

Temperatures are around 10-22°C, but fluctuate in feel.

April = tulip season (parks look great), but the weather can easily drive you inside.

Summer weather (June - August)

Summer is stable but not always pleasant.

  • Temperatures.
  • high humidity
  • minimum rain

It's not so much the extreme heat, but the fact that, the city gets hot between the buildings and the air hardly moves outside the coast.

💡 Reality: great for sightseeing in the morning and evening, during the day more like a break or the Bosphorus.

Weather in autumn (September - November)

Autumn is the best time to visit.

  • September: still summer temperatures
  • October: ideal (20-25 °C).
  • November: starting to get dry

Rain returns, but mostly in the form of showers.

💡 If you want "the best Istanbul": late September and October - minimum tourists, pleasant temperatures, good light for photos.

Precipitation and how many days of real rain

Istanbul doesn't have a monsoon season or long weeks of rain.

  • November - January
  • July - August

👉 Realistically: mostly short showers, not all day rain.

How to dress (practically)

  • Winter: jacket + extra layer (wind is unpleasant)
  • Spring/Autumn: sweatshirt + light jacket (ideally waterproof)
  • Summer: light clothing, but count on air conditioners inside

💡 Universal advice: no matter the season, wear something windproof.

A summary to save you from making mistakes

  • Istanbul is not "warm Turkey"
  • Wind and humidity play a bigger role than temperature
  • the weather changes quickly
  • the best seasons are spring and autumn
  • summer is usable but not ideal
  • winter has atmosphere but is not comfortable
