Galataport is a very different Istanbul than you expect from the historic centre.

A modern waterfront, restaurants, shops and a landscaped promenade along the Bosphorus. I went here for the first time more out of curiosity... and ended up spending more time here than I planned - mainly for the views and the atmosphere in the evening.

What is Galataport

Galataport is a modern port and shopping area on the European shore of the Bosphorus between Karaköy and Kabataş.

It serves as a terminal for cruise ships, but is also open to the public - you will find a promenade, restaurants, cafes, shops and access to the sea.

You have to go through security and baggage searches to get to the Galataport area.

Checkpoints are open 24/7.

What you will see and experience here

Galataport is a multifunctional district.

Overall, it has more of a "European vibe" than the classic oriental Istanbul.

The promenade along the Bosphorus

  • the main reason to visit
  • views of the ships and the other side of the city
  • ideal for an evening stroll

Restaurants and cafes

  • modern establishments, often with water views
  • prices higher than elsewhere in Istanbul

Shops

  • more international brands
  • more luxurious and expensive boutiques

Museum of Modern Art

The important museum of contemporary Turkish and European art is one of the main attractions of Galataport.

For current prices and opening hours, visit the official website: istanbulmodern.org/museum.

Is it worth going here?

For me, yes, but it depends on the context.

  • As a main attraction, no.
  • as a short stop or evening program - yes

I enjoyed the contrast the most - after a day in the historic centre, Galataport looks completely different.
