Istiklal Cadessi

Istiklal Caddesi, Istanbul, Turkey

During your visit to Istanbul, you shouldn't miss a stroll along the vibrant Istiklal Cadessi shopping street. Every day, 3 million locals and tourists pass through this boulevard, heading from the large Taksim Square to the much quieter Galata district.

Find a hotel in central Istanbul

Unfortunately, Istiklal Cadessi Street has also been infamous in the past. Its neighbourhood has always been rife with pickpockets and petty thieves, and in 2022 it was the site of one of Istanbul's worst terrorist attacks, in which six people died and 81 were injured.

Showhouses and fashion boutiques

The pedestrianised Istiklal Avenue is undoubtedly the exhibition centre of Istanbul. It is lined with beautifully landscaped houses that house renowned fashion and shoe shops. Every now and then you'll find a restaurant and other shops.

The famous historic Taksim - Tünel tram line also runs along the street.

Enjoy the small streets in the area

Personally, I liked the surrounding smaller streets of the Beoyglu district much more than Istiklal Cadessi itself.

Sure, they're very touristy with many overpriced shops selling Turkish sweets and souvenirs, but I still got a strong vibe of authentic Istanbul here.

Accommodation at Istiklal Cadessi

You'll especially like living around Istiklal Cadessi Avenue and Taksim Square if you like the hustle and bustle and nightlife.

Another advantage is good access to the airport, as direct buses leave from nearby Taksim Square.

I would recommend the following hotels:

  • Hotel Mara Istanbul - very cheap and well rated accommodation with spacious rooms
  • RUZ Hotels - top 5* local hotel right by Sishane metro station and near Galata Tower
