Girls Tower
The Maiden Tower (Kız Kulesi) is a small historic building on a small island in the Bosphorus, just a few dozen metres from the Asian shore in Üsküdar.
Originally it served as a guard and checkpoint on the water route, later for example as a lighthouse or quarantine station. Today, it functions mainly as a restaurant and a symbol of Istanbul - a place most people know from photos, although in reality they often visit it only from the coast.

Honestly - I was looking forward to the Maiden Tower mainly for the photos... and the reality was a bit disappointing. Not because it was ugly (quite the opposite), but because the best experience is not visiting the tower at all, but seeing it from the coast.
👉 If you're planning Istanbul, I recommend starting here:
- where to stay in Istanbul (locations + specific hotels)
- how to get around Istanbul (metro, ferries, Istanbulkart)
Is it worth visiting the Maiden Tower?
✅ Yes, if:
- you want an iconic photo of Istanbul (especially at sunset)
- you are attracted to the Asian side of the city, which is quieter
- you have time for a short stop off the main tourist routes
❌ More likely not, if:
- you want to maximize your time in Istanbul
- you don't want to deal with a ferry crossing
- you don't want to pay the expensive entrance fee
What to expect from your visit (reality vs. expectations)
- a small tower with an observation deck on an island - nothing more, nothing less
- restaurant/cafe inside
- no big exposition
Biggest difference from expectations: the best view is ON the tower from the shore, not FROM the tower.
Does it make sense to go inside?
Not for me:
- you can only get in by boat.
- the entrance fee is very expensive (although at least it includes the ferry ride)
- there is no major "wow moment" at the top - there are also beautiful views of the Bosphorus from the waterfront, Topkapi Palace or the Galata Tower
I personally wouldn't go up there again. I much more enjoyed sitting on the waterfront in Üsküdar and just watching the Bosphorus with the Maiden Tower in the foreground.
Aside from the restaurant, there are also nice, modern and clean free toilets inside.
Admission to the Maiden Tower
I didn't go to the Maiden Tower until the second day of my visit, so I was already expecting an extremely expensive entrance fee.
- 35 eur - basic admission
- 63 eur - Combined admission with Galata Tower (save 2 eur)
You can buy the ticket for 27 eur online on the official website, but then you have to pay an additional 8 eur administration fee at the dock. The online ticket is not bought for a specific time, so there is not much point in dealing with it.
The price 35 eur includes entry to the island, the view at the top of the Maiden Tower and the return ferry ride.
Opening hours
Every day 9:00-18:00, but it always depends on the schedule of the ferry that sails to the island within the ticket price.
There's limited access to get in at sunset - another reason to stay out.
How to get to the Maiden Tower (by boat)
If you decide to visit the Maiden Tower directly, you can only use the ferries provided by the Maiden Tower Museum.
No other public ferries that you could use Istanbulkart on stop at the Maiden Tower.
- The boats sail from 2 locations
- Üsküdar / Selacak wharf (approx. 2 times per hour), but only from May to October, location on map
- Karaköy / city centre (1x per 90 minutes), all year round, location on map
- round trip always included in the ticket price (you can go there from Karaköy and back to Üsküdar or vice versa
- detailed timetable: muze.gov.tr
But again - realistically it's only worth considering if you want a special experience and have enough time (overall the visit takes about 90 minutes including the boat ride)
Where is the best view of the Maiden Tower
For the best view of the Maiden Tower you have to go to the Asian side of the city to the Üsküdar district.
The best views are from the pedestrian promenade along the Bosphorus about 650 metres south of the Üsküdar wharf and train station.
The Maiden Tower is also very visible from the public ferries running on the Üsküdar-Karaköy or Üsküdar-Eminönü routes.
The Maiden Tower is beautifully illuminated during the night.
How to get to the waterfront with a view?
You always have to get to the Asian side of Istanbul. From the European side you can't see the Maiden Tower at all.
The key is to get to the Üsküdar station/dock.
By ferry
Best option. On public ferries you can use your own credit card or Istanbulkart.
You can reach Üsküdar by the following routes:
- Eminönü - 2x per hour
- Karaköy - 2x per hour
- Kabatas - 4 times per hour
By train Marmaray
The Marmaray underground train also has a station in Üsküdar, which is an alternative for travelling to the historic Sultanahmet district. It runs more frequently than the ferry, but you can only pay here with an Istanbulkart and not your own credit card.
Metro
The M5 metro line only runs from Üsküdar to the suburbs in the Asian part and is not very usable for tourists.
Best time to visit
- Sunset - best light
- evening - illuminated tower
I don't think it has the same atmosphere during the day. It's nice, but the illuminated Maiden Tower just has a different vibe.
The most common mistakes
1️⃣ Trying to get in at all costs.
The experience is 80% outside of the waterfront.
2️⃣ Ignoring the Asian side
Üsküdar is one of the most pleasant contrasts to downtown.
3️⃣ Bad timing
Without sunset, it loses much of its charm.

How to incorporate the Maiden Tower into your travel itinerary
The Maiden Tower is not a must-see in the sense of "you must go in". It's more about the waterfront atmosphere, stopping by and contrasting with the bustling centre.
I've visited the Maiden Tower twice:
- First time a full day in downtown Istanbul, afternoon on the Marmara train to Üsküdar, an evening walk along the promenade with a view, and a public ferry back to the center at dark.
- the second time I went directly to the island with the Maiden Tower, during midday, when it was the least crowded
