Galatská věž
The Galata Tower is one of Istanbul's most important landmarks, reflecting the wild history of this metropolis on the border of two continents.
From the tower you can enjoy a magnificent view of the whole of Istanbul, see the historic centre and the new buildings.
Book a hotel in central Istanbul
I only needed 30-40 minutes to see the Galata Tower itself.

What is the Galata Tower and why visit it
- Originally a 14th century defensive tower
- now one of the most famous landmarks in Istanbul
- height approx. 67 metres
The main reason to visit is the view - probably the best in all of Istanbul.
At night the Galata Tower is illuminated with green lights.
The view from the Galata Tower (the main reason for the visit)
The Galata Tower is the best of the paid sightseeing options - because it's right in the centre and you can see all of Istanbul from it.
What can you see well from here?
- The Bosphorus and boat traffic
- Golden Horn - the historic centre of Istanbul
- Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque on the horizon
- the rooftops of old Istanbul
The Galata Tower has a circular outdoor glassless = 360° panorama with great conditions for photography. But the space is narrow and often crowded.
Best time to visit
I often find myself wondering when is the best time to visit.
At the Galata Tower I observed the following:
Ideal
- right after opening (minimum people)
- Before sunset in the off-season (best views, lots of people, but not extreme crowds like on weekends or in summer)
Worst
- sunset in high season (extreme crowds)
- Noon (not much light + lots of people)

Entrance fees and opening hours
Open every day from 8:30-22:00.
Ticket prices are - as with most sights in Istanbul - brutal.
I find it a bit bizarre that you'll pay similar prices for the Galata Tower as you would for the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
- 30 eur - basic admission only for the Galata Tower
- 63 eur - Galata Tower + Maiden Tower (save 2 eur)
The ticket office is located in front of the Galata Tower. I visited Istanbul in March in the off season and there was no queue at all.
But you can also buy tickets on the official website museums.gov.tr.
How the visit works
- you buy your ticket on the spot or online (not for a specific time)
- the elevator takes you almost to the top
- the last part is up the stairs
- at the top, a narrow outdoor terrace around the whole tower
- you can go down by elevator or stairs
How to include in the itinerary
Ideal combination:
- Galata Tower → Istiklal Avenue → Taksim
- Galata → bridge → historical centre
- Galata → Maiden Tower (within one discounted ticket)
Transport to Galata Tower
The Galata Tower is located in the Beyoglu district, which is full of restaurants and souvenir shops and is very popular with tourists. You can get there easily using public transport:
- Metro - Şişhane stop: take the M2 metro line to get here from northern Istanbul or from the historic city centre on the other side of the Golden Horn.
- Tram - Karaköy stop: the T1 tram is the best option when travelling from the popular tourist destinations in the Sultanahmet district
- Tünel cable car: the cable car takes you to the tower from the T1 tram stop at Galata Bridge
