Transfer at Bangkok Airport
Suvarnabhumi Airport has one main terminal for check-in and all checkpoints. This is good news - you don't have to deal with transfers between buildings like at other Asian airports.
The international section is on the right side of the terminal, the domestic section on the left. The two are interconnected.
- Arrivals.
- Departures: 4th floor
- Opening hours: 24 hours a day
Satellite building
The satellite terminal is located in the middle of the airport area with some departure gates. You can get there by free automatic train in about 3 minutes.
You don't have to deal with anything extra - it's all within one system and all after the security check, which takes place in the main terminal.
Transfer between flights in Bangkok
The most important question when transferring is not "where is the gate", but: "How much time should I allow?"
Below you will find realistic scenarios according to the type of transfer.
Hotels near Bangkok BKK Airport
International <-> International
A very simple and straightforward option.
If you have flights on one ticket:
- you stay in the transit zone - you do not go through immigration control and therefore do not need to fill out an arrival card for Thailand
- you go through security - clearly marked and for transit passengers only
- luggage is automatically transferred
Realistic minimum transfer times in our experience:
- 35 minutes - moving between gates in the main or satellite terminal
- 45 minutes - transfer between main and satellite terminal
- 60 minute transfer can be managed (at security tell them you have a "tight transfer" and you may be sent to the priority line)
If you have two separate reservations:
- you usually have to go through standard immigration, come out and through main security to the domestic section
- direct transfer through the transit zone may not work even if you only have carry-on luggage and online check-in for the next flight
Are you continuing on your journey?
On our website, you'll find detailed guides on how airport transportation works as well as what to deal with immediately upon arrival at other destinations:
The most common onward connections from Bangkok:
- 👉 Transport from Manila Airport to downtown
- 👉 Kuala Lumpur - top places to see
- 👉 Hong Kong - visas and differences from mainland China
If you're changing countries, it pays to have mobile data ready before you land:
Get an international eSIM before you fly
International -> Domestic
If you continue on through Thailand after arriving in Bangkok, you will go through immigration but still remain within one terminal.
If you have both flights on one booking:
- you stay in the transit zone - you go through immigration control for transfer passengers.
- queues at immigration can be anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes
- you go through security - clearly marked and designated for transit passengers only
- good organisation, queues usually up to 15 minutes
- luggage is automatically transferred - this is unusual compared to other transfers of this type in the world
Realistic minimum transfer times in our experience:
- 60 minutes - moving between gates in the main terminal
- 75 minutes - transfer between satellite and main terminal
- 90-minute transfer can be managed without problems
If you have two separate reservations:
- you usually have to go through standard immigration, come out and through the main security checkpoint to the domestic section
- direct transfer through the transit zone may not work even if you only have carry-on luggage and online check-in for the next flight

Domestic -> International
When you arrive from another Thai city, you have to go through security and passport control.
Sometimes your luggage is automatically transferred, sometimes not - always check this when you first check in.
Real time in my experience:
- 35-80 minutes, depending on how busy immigration control is.
If you are flying to Europe or Asia in the evening rush hour, allow for a longer margin.
Domestic <-> Domestic
Fastest scenario.
If you are transferring between two domestic flights within Thailand, you do not need to leave the transit area.
There is also no security check and your luggage will be transferred automatically.
Usually this type of transfer will take 15-20 minutes depending on the distance from the departure gate.
Transfer to Don Mueang Airport
If you're combining flights between Suvarnabhumi Airport BKK and Don Mueang International Airport DMK, you'll have to transfer across town.
- A free shuttle bus runs from 5:00am to midnight.
- The journey takes 80-100 minutes depending on traffic.
When combining separate tickets, we recommend a minimum 6-hour reserve.
Is it worth visiting the city during the transfer?
If you have at least 8 hours between flights, a short visit to Bangkok may make sense.
Realistically, though, do the math:
- 1 hour drive to downtown
- 1 hour return
- return to the airport 2 hours before departure
Of the 8 hours, you will have approximately 3-4 hours of net time left.

Good evening,
I will be arriving in Bangkok from Italy via ITA flight, and from there I will travel to Vientiane in Laos.
I have hold luggage, which I will need to collect and fully check in for Vientiane, do you know if I need any additional documents to stay only at the airport, and how long would it take me for all these operations?
Thank you
Hello,
You need to fill out the online Thai arrival card 3 days before your trip, instructions here: https://www.cestee.it/destinazio...ndia/visto.
At the airport you will go to immigration control. Sometimes there is a 5 minute queue. But last time we waited almost 45 minutes.
Then you pick up your luggage, take the escalator up 2 floors to check in (check-in desks usually open 3 hours before departure).
You then go through passport control and again through security to the planes (queues can be up to 20 minutes).
I land from IST to BKK and then fly to Vietnam to Phu Quoc on ThaiViet Jet airline. I only have hand luggage. Can I go to the transfer or do I have to leave and go to the departure hall?
If you are pre-checked in online with your boarding pass for the ThaiVietJet flight, you can go straight to the connecting flight.
Good morning, I plan to arrive at Terminal Sat-1 in BKK with ITA-Airways flight and then board the THAI Airways flight to Vientiane that leaves from the Main Terminal. I will only be carrying hand luggage and will probably have to check in for the flight to Vientiane. I would like to know if I will have to leave the transit area and if the three hours and 45 minutes will be sufficient. Thank you
Hello, THAI Airways has counters for transfer passengers in the transit area as well, so you may not have to go to a public area.
But even if you have to check in again (i.e. go through immigration), 3 hours and 45 minutes is plenty of time to transfer.
Hello, I'm travelling from Reunion Island (France) to Hong Kong via Bangkok with a connecting flight. On the outward journey there are about 3 hours, which seems simple to me. But on the return journey, the Hong Kong/Bangkok flight arrives at 8pm and the Bangkok/Reunion flight arrives at 7am the next day. We're planning to stay at the airport's Novotel hotel. Do I need to collect my luggage and go through immigration control?
Hello, your luggage will most likely be directed to your final destination. So you will not pick them up in Bangkok, you will get the final information at check-in.
You will go through immigration as the Novotel is outside the transit zone.
Hi, I need advice on travelling from Bali to Bangkok and from bkk to Denmark. How much time should I plan in bkk airport given that I have to check out from the first flight, pickup luggage and check in for the second international flight. The estimate should be quite conservative as I am travelling for an important event in Denmark. Thank you very much in advance
Hi, if you want to be sure, I would definitely plan on 4 hours or more. Or I'd consider an extra full day in Bangkok to be absolutely sure.
Hello, we have a flight from Koh Samui to Bangkok with Bangkok Airways. Then we have to check in again with hold baggage for a flight to Munich with swiss international. The tickets are booked but our stopover is 2h05. If you know the geometry of Bangkok airport, do you think this is possible? Thank you very much.
Hello, if the tickets are bought as one booking, then you are guaranteed a transfer and have nothing to worry about.
If you bought each ticket separately, 2 hours is still plenty of time, although you won't have much margin for any delays on the first flight.
The tickets were bought in one go. So that puts my mind at rest. Thank you very much Krystof!
Hi, I'll be arriving in BKK on 17 April around 5:30pm, if it's a good fit, then I need to transfer to Krung Thep Aphiwat station and catch the train at 8:22pm. Is this manageable? Thank you
it's going to be about the breasts of a Thai tranny
We fly from Munich via Bangkok to Phuket. Munich - Bangkok is with Lufthansa, connecting flight is with Thai Airways. We have booked the entire flight with a change of flights with Lufthansa. Do we have to check in our luggage again in Bangkok? Is a transfer time of 2 hours 35 minutes sufficient?
Thank you in advance! :)
See information above. Usually you do not need to re-check your luggage, it will be checked in at Munich and collected when you arrive in Phuket.
2.5 hours is certainly enough time for a quiet transfer.
Good day,
I will soon be flying from Phuket to Frankfurt with a stopover of 3h 45min in BKK. Both flights are with Thai Airways and the suitcases will be checked through. Do I have to leave the transit area after arrival in BKK or can I directly follow the signs to the international transfer? Many thanks in advance!
Hello,
You are flying Phuket - Bangkok (domestic) and Bangkok - Frankfurt (international). This means that you will go through immigration control in Bangkok, but you do not have to leave the transit area. As you write, follow the signs for international transfers and everything will go smoothly.
For those passengers who maybe have short connections requiring going through immigration, which may take a rather long time, you can book Fast Track services that make you skip the long queues and refuce your queuing time to 5 minutes. This service can be booked on line through Trip.com or other such providers. I recommend.
