Kariakoo Market

Kariakoo Market is one of Dar es Salaam's most famous and definitely liveliest neighbourhoods.
Although the name evokes that it is one particular place - a market - the reality is a little different.

A whole district full of stalls and shops
Kariakoo Market originally refers to the large concrete market building, which is currently undergoing long-term renovation (expected to open in 2027).
In reality, however, Kariakoo Market is a huge district with dozens of streets literally littered with various shops, stalls and vendors.
You can get absolutely everything in Kariakoo.
Food, toys, clothes, luggage, kitchenware, hardware, butcher shops, car parts... Everything. Except for fish, which is sold at my favourite Ferry Fish Market.
As modern shopping malls are still not widespread in Tanzania, Kariakoo Market is replacing them and this is where locals from all walks of life come to shop.
Safety for tourists
I have read on many different forums that Kariakoo Market is the least safe place for tourists within Dar es Salaam.
I have walked probably every street and nowhere did I feel even a hint of danger. Probably because Kariakoo is not primarily a slum, but wealthier people come here to shop.
Of course, I would recommend great caution on your personal belongings.
Kariakoo is the busiest neighborhood, and it's easy to lose your wallet or phone in the crowds.
However, if you keep a tight grip on everything, the likelihood of being robbed here is not much greater than anywhere else in Dar es Salaam.
How to get there
I walked to the Kariakoo district from the modern centre, taking about 30 minutes.
The path is safe and goes through the normal residential areas.
You can of course use tuk tuks, motorbikes or Bolt and Uber, but expect that the streets around Kariakoo Market are very busy and walking is often the quickest mode of transport.
Hotels in Kariakoo
If you love busy neighbourhoods, Kariakoo is a good place to stay.
On the southern outskirts you'll find the decently rated large Chelsea Hotel *** ideal for travellers who want to stay in a standard hotel at reasonable prices (a night around 45 usd).
