St. Joseph's Cathedral

St. Joseph's Cathedral

One of the few significant historical monuments in Dar es Salaam is the Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph.

The church can be found on the main coastal street directly opposite the ferry port to Zanzibar, and its traditional appearance contrasts strongly with the surrounding modern skyscrapers.

St Joseph's Cathedral was built during German colonisation between 1897 and 1902 and has one slender tower.

The interior of the church is only open to the public and free of charge during masses, which take place several times a day on Sundays and roughly 1-3 times a day on other days.

Outside of mass, the church remains locked.
