National Museum

National Museum

The largest museum in Tanzania is located in the government buildings and foreign embassies district in the eastern part of the city centre.

Nearby, you can also visit the Kivukoni Botanical Garden, but I don't think it's worth a visit - the garden is heavily neglected and you can walk through it in 5 minutes.

What will you see at the museum?

The National Museum is mainly dedicated to the cultural and natural history of Tanzania, focusing on the Shirazi era between the 13th and 15th centuries.

A significant part of the museum is also dedicated to colonial history, when Tanzania was successively ruled by the British or the Germans, and you will also find a natural history section.

In general, the National Museum of Tanzania is rather poorly equipped and will take you about 45 minutes to visit.

I would only recommend it to true history buffs or when the weather is bad.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The museum is open daily from 9:30am-6pm.

International visitors can pay for admission 6 usd / 16 000 tzs. Payment can only be made in cash in US dollars or Tanzanian shillings.
