Stone Town in a nutshell

St. Joseph Cathedral

Stone Town is the historic chaotic centre of the largest town on the island of Zanzibar. Just the fact that the centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site means that it should definitely not be missed.

The small town's sprawling size is interspersed with a tangle of winding streets that are surrounded by old houses built from coral limestone. It is this unique building material, sourced from the sea's coral reefs, that makes Stone Town such a unique place.

Many of the houses are beautifully restored, you can see the ravages of time on many of the houses and some of them have to be supported by massive wooden logs.

Wander the streets, visit the lively markets and bazaars, enjoy an evening on the seaside promenade full of food stalls and discover the many sights.

Although tourists often head to Stone Town for only half-day trips from the seaside resorts, I spent 2 full days here and would have easily stayed even longer.
