Tokyo Skytree
At 634 metres, the Tokyo Skytree is the third tallest building in the world and the tallest in Japan.
It serves as a transmitter and, in particular, as a tourist observation deck, one of the most popular in Asia.

The observation tower has two vantage points for the public. From my perspective, they are both very similar and personally, I probably wouldn't need to go to the higher ones a second time.
- Tembo Deck at 350 metres
- Tembo Galleria at 450 metres
However, at the higher lookout you can also look through the glass almost perpendicularly down, unlike the "Tembo Deck" lookout.
My opinion - is the tower worth a visit?
I personally like the tallest buildings, viewpoints and observation towers, so it was clear that Tokyo Skytree is a must-see for me. But in the end, I was actually quite disappointed:
✅ What I liked
- The 3rd tallest building in the world for my collection
- views of the whole Tokyo
❌ What I didn't like
- quite expensive entrance fee -> visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building for free instead
- Mount Fuji can only be seen in really nice weather -> visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building instead
- more interesting views and the building itself -> Tokyo Tower
- online booking required if you don't want to wait several hours
Book your tickets online

Ideal itinerary with Tokyo Skytree
The tower is not right in the centre of Tokyo, so it's a good idea to combine a visit with sightseeing in the area.
An ideal day itinerary would be like this:
- morning in Ueno Park and its museums
- In the afternoon, transfer to Senso-ji Temple (25 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by subway)
- visit Tokyo Skytree in the evening (20 minutes by foot or 10 minutes by subway)
- evening visit the lively Akihabara district (15 subway Ginza Line)
The subway station at Tokyo Skytree is called Oshiage and 2 subway lines stop here:
- Asakusa Line / Keisei Narita - towards downtown, Haneda Airport or Narita Airport
- Hanzomon Line - direction Kōkyō Imperial Palace, Shibuya
