Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine is one of the most famous shrines in Kyoto and the symbolic entrance to the Gion district.

Just beyond the grounds is Maruyama Park, a popular spot for hanami and picnics under the sakura trees.

Honestly? It's a very popular and often crowded place. If you've seen Fushimi Inari or the quieter shrines to the north of the city, it can feel a bit crowded.

Find accommodation in the Gion area

Is it worth visiting Yasaka Shrine?

Yes, if:

  • you are in the Gion area
  • you want to see a traditional Shinto shrine without an entrance fee
  • you arrive in the evening when the lanterns are lit

❌ More likely no, if:

  • you are looking for a quiet atmosphere
  • you only have 1 day in Kyoto
  • you've already visited more significant shrines like Fushimi Inari-taisha

💡 Alternative :

If you want a stronger architectural experience, consider the nearby Chion-in or Kodai-ji temples.

If you're looking for prettier red Shinto shrines, I liked Kamigamo-jinja in the very north of Kyoto the best.

For me, Yasaka is a natural part of the itinerary rather than a separate destination.

Maruyama Park and sakura

Just past the shrine begins Maruyama Park, the oldest public park in Kyoto.

In spring, it's famous for its flowering shidarezakura cherry trees, under which evening hanami picnics are held. This is when the area is extremely crowded.

In the off-season, the park acts more like a regular urban space, serving as a link between Gion, Chion-in and Kiyomizu-dera.

The most common mistakes

1️⃣ Coming here just for the "must see" list
The place works better as part of a wider route.

2️⃣ Underestimate the crowds during sakura
In high season, the area is one of the most crowded in Kyoto.

3️⃣ Spend too much time here on a short visit to the city
There are more significant sights that have more historical value.

Entrance fees and opening hours

  • Free admission
  • grounds open 24/7
  • The sanctuary is beautifully lit in the evening

Beware of confusion with Yasaka Pagoda

Yasaka Shrine is not the same as the iconic Yasaka Pagoda (Hōkan-ji).

Located about a 15-minute walk south in the Higashiyama area towards Kiyomizu-dera, the pagoda is one of Kyoto's most photographed symbols.

While Yasaka Shrine is a Shinto shrine at the entrance to Gion and adjacent to Maruyama Park, Yasaka Pagoda is a Buddhist structure standing alone among traditional houses.

If you're looking for a typical "instagram" view with a pagoda among the narrow streets, head to Yasaka Pagoda.

We don't describe Yasaka Pagoda separately on our website because it's only ever open for 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays and is thus under extreme siege from the crowds.

Tours and activities

If you want to walk through Gion, Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera with interpretation and without dealing with logistics, a walking tour may make sense.
