Shimogamo Shrine
Shimogamo Shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. Its history dates back to the 6th century, before Kyoto itself was established as the imperial capital.
It is known for its beautiful red entrance gate, which is typical of Shinto shrines and not Buddhist temples.
It is located in the north of the city, surrounded by the Tadasu no Mori forest, which acts as a natural oasis of calm in the middle of the urban development.
The area is part of Kyoto's UNESCO-listed historical sites.

Is Shimogamo Shrine worth a visit?
✅ Yes, if:
- you are looking for a quieter shrine without mass crowds
- you're interested in the ancient Shinto tradition
- you are between the Imperial Palace and the northern part of the city
❌ Not likely if you're:
- you have only 1 day in Kyoto
- you are expecting monumental architecture
- you don't want to stray far from the most famous sights
💡 Alternative:
If you're looking for a more striking and photogenic shrine, consider the most famous Fushimi Inari. If you want a combination of temple and dramatic views, aim for Kiyomizu-dera.
Shimogamo is more of a place for a leisurely stroll than a "main attraction of the day".
What makes Shimogamo special?
The main value is not the architecture itself, but:
- 🌳 Tadasu no Mori forest - a natural forest grove hundreds of years old
- ⛩️ simple, traditional Shinto architecture
- 🎎 strong links to imperial history
The atmosphere here is different from crowded shrines - quieter, more natural.
The most common mistakes when visiting
1️⃣ Expecting a spectacular complex like Fushimi Inari
Shimogamo is more subtle and less dramatic.
2️⃣ Arrive here independently across town
Works best as part of a walking route through the northern part of downtown.
3️⃣ Skip Tadasu no Mori Forest
Just walking through the forest is often a more powerful experience than the main buildings.
A walking path full of souvenir stalls runs through the Tadasu no Mori forest.
How to include Shimogamo in your itinerary
The shrine is located north of the centre and combines very well with:
- 🌳 Kyoto Imperial Palace
- 🏯 Shokoku-ji
- 🚶♂️ a quiet walking route through the northern part of the city, for example I walked from here to Kyoto Botanical Gardens
Ideally, it should be included as a quiet part of the day away from the main tourist peaks.
If you're planning a northern axis of the city, check out the What to See in Kyoto overview for more connections.
