Shrine of Ikuta

Ikuta-Jinja Shrine

Ikuta-jinja is one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Kobe - it was founded in the 3rd century AD.

It's just a few minutes' walk from the bustling Sannomiya district, but inside the grounds there's a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere with a forest, paths and several smaller shrines.

Although it's Kobe's most famous historical landmark, it's incomparably less crowded than more famous cities.

The 10 best hotels in Kobe

✅ Yes, if:

  • you want to see a traditional Japanese shrine without the big crowds
  • you're looking for a short stop in the city centre
  • you're interested in Japanese culture and Shinto rituals

❌ More likely no, if:

  • you only have 1 or 2 days in Kobe
  • you prefer hiking in the mountains or shopping in the city centre

What to expect

The main prayer hall is right at the entrance, but more interesting is the back of the grounds, where a short path leads through a small park and there are several smaller shrines.

The most beautiful zen spot can be found at the back of the shrine by a small lake.

The atmosphere is peaceful and the place feels more like a local shrine than a tourist attraction.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The Ninja Sanctuary is free to enter.

The site is open every day from 7:00-17:00.

My tips and how much time to set aside

  • 🕗 15-20 minutes: a short walk around the grounds
  • 🕗 30 minutes: a quieter visit and photos
  • 👉 the back of the site tends to be much quieter than the main entrance
  • The visit can easily be combined with a walk around Sannomiya or a trip to the station
  • 👉 in summer the area is pleasantly shaded

How to get there

Ikuta-jinja is about 5 minutes from Sannomiya Central Station, where both subway lines, JR, Hankyu and Hanshin trains cross and the monorail from Kobe Airport also ends here.

Mobile data is very useful for finding connections and getting your bearings in Japan - it's handy to get an eSIM for Japan that works as soon as you land.
