Kobe Port Tower
Kobe Port Tower is the most famous building in Kobe and the symbol of the entire city.
The slender red tower stands 108 metres high right in Meriken Park and from the observation deck you can see Harborland, the harbour and the surrounding mountains that enclose the city from the north.
The tower's architecture is intended to resemble the traditional Japanese tsuzumi drum. The tower is surrounded by 32 steel poles to welcome ships returning to shore.
Its location right on the promenade makes it very easy to combine a visit with a walk along the sea or a dinner in the area.

Is Kobe Port Tower worth a visit?
Short answer: yes, the tower is one of the symbols of Kobe and is famous all over Japan. Many people head to Kobe as part of a day trip from Osaka just to see the tower or to see it from the tower.
✅ Yes, if:
- you're planning a walk in the harbor or Harborland
- you like sights and photos of the city
- you want a short and easy stop that won't take too much time
❌ More likely no, if:
- you don't want to pay to go to the lookout and you just want to see the tower from the outside
Best time to visit
The best atmosphere is shortly after sunset, when the harbour, bridges and buildings around the waterfront light up. During the day the view is also nice, but in the evening the whole place looks much livelier.
However, if you want to take photos, it's worth coming in the daylight - the view is only behind glass and glare is created at night.
What to expect - beautiful sea and mountain views
The viewing platform is not extremely high, but that's what makes the view interesting - you can see the boats, the promenade, the bridges and the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The mountains surrounding Kobe are also great to see.
The whole visit is fairly quick and I spent about 25 minutes here.
A big advantage is the area around the tower. Meriken Park and the waterfront are some of the most pleasant places in Kobe to walk, sit or take photos, so even without going up, the visit makes sense.
The tower has two viewing platforms:
- fully indoor, where you can find, for example, toilets or small refreshments.
- an outdoor gallery (cramped and crowded), but even here you can only take photos through the glass
My practical tips
- the best atmosphere is in the evening, but at the same time there are more people
- the wind from the sea is quite strong even in the warmer months
- nice photos of the tower from the promenade towards Harborland
- if you are planning to come at sunset, it is better to book your ticket online (limited number of seats)
Admission and opening hours
Kobe Port Tower is open daily from 10:00-19:00.

If you're heading to the tower in the early evening at sunset, buy your tickets at the official website kobe-port-tower.com at least a few hours in advance.
Hotels with a view of the tower
If you want to stay close to the tower and have evening views literally minutes away, check out the current offerings in the Harborland and Meriken Park area.
I would recommend these hotels:
- Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel ***** - One of the most iconic hotels in Kobe with the best views of the sea.
- Hotel Okura Kobe ***** - the tallest hotel in Harborland with great views of the city, sea and mountains
How to get there
Kobe Port Tower is located in the southern part of downtown Kobe and can be reached by several ways:

- by the Umie shopping centre, about 15 minutes walk from the promenade
- Kobe subway to Mintao Motomachi station - ideal for travelling from Kobe Sannomiya

Mobile data is very handy for navigating connections and finding routes in Japan - the easiest way is to get an eSIM for Japan, which works as soon as you land.
