Where to stay in Kobe

Kobe

Kobe is a fairly compact city and most hotels are concentrated in a few areas.

For most visitors, it's best to choose accommodation near the main stations, where there is easy access to both the city and Osaka or Kyoto.

Where to stay in Kobe

For most travelers, three areas make sense: Sannomiya, Motomachi/Harborland and Shin-Kobe. Each has a slightly different character.

Sannomiya

Sannomiya is the city's main transportation hub and the area with the largest selection of hotels, restaurants and shops. From here, it's easy to take the train to Osaka, Mount Rokko and the harbour.

My recommendations for Sannomiya hotels:

Motomachi and Harborland - accommodation by the harbor

The area around Motomachi and Harborland is ideal if you want to walk to the sea in the evening and be close to the main attractions in the harbour.

This is the liveliest part of Kobe with lots of shops, restaurants and tourist activities on offer.

If I were staying in Kobe for more days, I would definitely choose this area.

My recommendation for Harborland Hotels:

Shin-Kobe - good when arriving by shinkansen

Shin-Kobe Station is close to the mountains and Nunobiki Falls, so it's convenient if you're arriving by shinkansen or planning a nature tour.

I would really only stay here if your main destination in Kobe is the mountains or if you are leaving Kobe early in the morning by shinkansen.

There is actually only one hotel within walking distance of the station.

What type of hotel to choose in Kobe

You'll mainly come across three types of accommodation in Kobe, which vary in price and style.

How much do hotels in Kobe cost

Approximate prices for a double room:

  • Budget: from 11 500 jpy
  • mid-range: from 17 000 jpy
  • higher standard: from 24 000 jpy

Prices tend to be lower than in Osaka or Kyoto, so Kobe can be an interesting alternative to staying in these cities.

Does it make sense to sleep in Kobe, or just for a trip?

Many people come to Kobe just for a day trip from Osaka, but staying overnight has several advantages:

  • more interesting atmosphere in the evening
  • more time for hiking in the mountains
  • beautiful night views

If your itinerary includes Mount Rokko, Mount Maya or dinner at the port, an overnight stay makes a lot of sense.
