Motomachi Street

Motomachi Street

Motomachi Street is the main shopping and covered pedestrian street in Kobe, connecting the Sannomiya Station area of the port with Kobe Port Tower.

It runs mainly through the Nankinmachi Chinatown. It's a pleasant place to stroll, alternating between smaller shops, cafes and restaurants, and one of the most natural routes to take between the main attractions in the city.

Motomachi Street naturally connects to a set of other shopping streets such as Ikuta Road or Sannomiya Center Gai Shopping Street in the direction of Sannomiya Station.

Is Motomachi Street worth a visit?

Short answer: yes, but more as a nice stop or route between the port and downtown Kobe than as a standalone destination.

✅ Yes, if:

  • you want to walk between the harbour and the centre
  • looking for a place to grab a coffee or do a little shopping
  • you enjoy the atmosphere of Japanese shopping streets
  • a place to visit when it's raining in Kobe

❌ Not likely if:

  • you have very limited time in Kobe and are only heading to the main sights
  • you're not looking for shops or restaurants

What to expect? Shops and restaurants

Motomachi Street is an indoor shopping arcade typical of Japanese cities - a long pedestrian zone where it's pleasant even in bad weather.

You'll find a mix of small boutiques, drugstores, cafes and restaurants, but the atmosphere is quieter than, say, Dotonbori in Osaka or Nishiki Market in Kyoto.

Near the eastern end of Motomachi you'll also find a few upmarket department stores like Daimaru with the most expensive goods.

The location is a big advantage: the street runs practically straight through Chinatown, and it's also just a few minutes' walk from the harbour, so it's a natural passage when moving between major sites.

Best time to visit

Motomachi Street works well at any time of the day.

Afternoons and early evenings tend to be the liveliest, when all the shops and restaurants are open and it's also not as hot as it is around midday in the summer.

In the evening, a stroll can easily be combined with dinner in Chinatown or continuing towards the harbour.

Practical tips

  • the street is most interesting as a link between the harbour and the centre, not as a separate destination
  • most shops open around mid-morning and close earlier in the evening (around 7:30pm) than restaurants
  • on hot days the covered arcade is more pleasant than the open streets
