Suma Beach
Suma Beach is not a typical tropical beach worth driving halfway across Japan for.
But if you're spending a few days in Kobe or Osaka and want to get out of the city for a while, it's the easiest way to get to the sea without a long journey.
In the summer, the beach functions mainly as a city swimming beach; in the off-season, it's more of a quiet place to stroll along the coast with views of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge.

Is the beach worth a visit?
I loved it here, despite the fact that I visited Kobe in December.
Go to Suma Beach if:
- ✅ you are in Japan in the summer and want to enjoy a day by the sea
- ✅ you like to stroll along the city's landscaped promenades outside the city centre
Skip a visit if:
- ❌ you are in Japan outside of summer and are not interested in beaches except for swimming
- ❌ you only have a few hours in Kobe and want to visit more specific places
How much time to set aside?
In the summer? All day if you like to swim in the sea and sunbathe.
If you're heading here more for walking, then we recommend setting aside about 2 hours - 1 hour to walk and then 30 minutes each way to/from the centre.
What to expect - beach facilities
The beach is wide and has fine light sand, but the water is not as clear as on the islands in southern Japan.
Expect large crowds of tourists and Japanese on summer weekends.
During the peak summer season, the beach bars and facilities are open, but in the off-season the place feels rather quiet and sometimes even sleepy.
On the other hand, there's plenty of space, nice views of the coastline and, if visibility is good, the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge.
Free toilets are available at many places on the beach. There are no showers or changing facilities.
Lockers for storing belongings are at every train station, including those by the beach.
There is a nice pine park along the beach, and you can take a picture of the small red lighthouse about halfway down the beach.
The tourist sign is also popular. Be Kobe located near the aquarium.
On the eastern part of Suma Beach you can visit the huge Suma Seaworld Aquarium all year round.
How to get there
The easiest way to get here is by train from Sannomiya or Kobe stations, which takes 20-30 minutes.
- JR trains - Suma station right by the beach
- direct connections Osaka - Kobe - Himeji
- ✅ JR Pass
- ❌ Kansai Railway Pass
- Hanshin / Sanyo Electric trains - Sanyo-Suma station approx. 80 metres from the beach
- slightly longer journey from the centre than JR trains (approx. 10 minutes)
- ❌ JR Pass
- ✅ Kansai Railway Pass
You can easily find the connection via Google Maps.
Mobile data is handy for finding connections - if you don't already have it, it's worth getting an eSIM for Japan before you travel, which works as soon as you land and without searching for Wi-Fi.
