Fontana dell'Acqua Paola

Fontana dell' Acqua Paola

Fontana dell'Acqua Paola was one of my most surprising stops.

Not because it was famous. After all, I didn't know about it at all and only stopped here by chance on my way from the Gianicolo lookout down to Trastevere...

But because it looks monumental, photogenic and yet there's often hardly anyone here.

A huge difference from the crowded Trevi Fountain.

The locals simply call it Il Fontanone.

Why Fontana dell'Acqua Paola is so interesting

I was fascinated by the Fontana. Probably also because I didn't know about it beforehand.

The monumental appearance

  • a huge white baroque fountain
  • built in the early 17th century
  • looks more like a movie set than a regular fountain.

It's actually much bigger than it looks in the photos.

View of Rome

Just in front of the fountain is one of the best views in the city.

  • The rooftops of the historic centre
  • the domes of the churches
  • the beautiful light over the city in the evening

Best time?

  • Sunrise (the fountain is beautifully lit)
  • blue hour after dark

Is it worth coming here?

Yes, if:

  • you want a beautiful view without crowds
  • you are looking for photogenic places off the main tourist routes
  • you plan to visit Gianicolo or Trastevere

❌ More likely no, if:

  • you have minimal time in Rome
  • you are only looking for iconic places (first time in Rome)
  • you don't want to walk uphill

💡 Alternative:
For a more famous fountain, try the Trevi Fountain. But for a quieter atmosphere, Acqua Paola is significantly better.

Practical information

  • Admission: free
  • Open: 24/7
  • Toilets: not at the fountain
  • restaurants/bars: more downstairs in Trastevere

How to get there?

I walked to the fountain when I wanted to combine the view of the sunset on Gianicolo hill with dinner in Trastevere.

But you can also get here by public transport.

There are two bus lines that run here (stop Psg Gianicolo/Villa Corsini):

  • 115 - about once every 10-12 minutes
    • in the direction of Paola (centre, close to the Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican) or Trastevere
  • 870 - approx. 1x every 20-35 minutes
    • direction Paola (centre, close to the Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican) or the western suburbs of Rome
