Frankfurt's main square, Römerberg, is located in the historic centre of the Altstadt and is one of the most beautiful squares in Germany.

It is lined with important historical buildings such as the Old Town Hall and the Alte Nikolaikirche.

Book a hotel in the centre of Frankfurt

Römberg has served as the centre of Frankfurt since the 15th century, when the first town hall building was built here. Nowadays, it is a popular place for tourists, local gatherings, as well as various celebrations or the famous Christmas markets.

What to see on the Römerberg

The centre of Altstadt impresses tourists with several sights and attractions.

I personally spent almost 2 hours here.

Frankfurter Römer

The building complex that gave the square its name dates back to the 15th century and houses the Frankfurt City Hall.

The huge complex takes up an entire block west of the square.

The Frankfurter Römer is not a museum and usually only occasional events are held here. It still serves its original purpose and houses many offices.

Alte Nikolaikirche

The old church of St. Nicholas is the highest landmark of the square.

The magnificent Gothic-style Lutheran church dates back to the 15th century and its tower reaches a height of 48 metres.

Entrance to the church is free.

Historisches Museum

In the southern part of the square you will visit the Historisches Museum Frankfurt, one of the most visited museums in the city.

Its collections cover the complete history of Frankfurt with many valuable archaeological or artistic objects.

The visit to the museum alone will take around 1 hour.

Hotels near the square

Even though the Römerberg is Frankfurt's main tourist attraction, there is no hotel right on the square.

The nearest hotels can be found about 250 metres from the square:

How to get there

The nearest public transport stops are:

  • U-Bahn - Dom/Römer station (directly on the square)
    • lines U4, U5
  • Tram - stop Römer/Paulskirche (directly on the square)
    • lines 11, 12, 14, 16, 18
  • S-Bahn - Hauptwache station (approx. 400 metres)
    • lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S8, S9
