The 10 best hotels in Frankfurt
Tune in to Christmas with the magical atmosphere of the market, where the smell of traditional Glühwein, Christmas cakes, strudels and roasted sausages, wafts through the air.
All this with lavishly decorated Christmas backdrops and illuminated trees.
When and where are the Christmas markets in Frankfurt?
Frankfurt am Main hosts several different Christmas markets each year, each with slightly different dates and opening times, and also with a different atmosphere.
Generally, the markets start in the second half of November and end either on 23 December or after Christmas (most often on 26 December).
Most markets are open daily between 11:00 and 21:00, but again the times vary according to the specific market.

Map of the Christmas markets
We have created a map of the biggest Christmas markets in Frankfurt. We will update it regularly every year.
Frankfurter Weihnachtsmarkt
The main markets organised by the city are huge and spread across several squares and streets throughout the historic centre.
All these markets have uniform opening hours and dates:
- 🕙 10:00-21:00 from Monday to Saturday; on Sundays from 11:00
- 📅 24 November - 23 December 2025
- Official website: visitfrankfurt.travel/frankfurt-christmas-market
- Tip: stay at the great value-for-money Motel One Frankfurt ***, located just a few metres from the main markets
The city's official markets have several locations, but each one is different.
Römerberg
The largest markets can be found on the main square , the Römerberg, from where they continue to the banks of the River Main.
It is here that you will find the largest stalls with the greatest diversity. Römerberg is great for traditional Glühwein mulled wine, ornament shops and food.
You'll also find a carousel for children and Frankfurt's largest Christmas tree.
On the quay by the River Main there are stalls aimed mainly at children with lots of attractions, especially for the little ones under 5.
- ✅ Most stalls
- ✅ Most Christmas atmosphere with a tree and a huge number of mulled wine stalls
- ❌ Extremely crowded environment, especially on Fridays and Saturdays
- 👉 It is recommended to go to Römeberg early in the day, most crowds are in the evening between 17:00 and 20:30
- 📍 Location on the map
Paulsplatz
Just a few steps from the Römerberg in front of the Paulskirche, the Christmas market continues with more stalls and a completely different atmosphere.
Although the sounds of the bustling Römerberg can still be heard here, St. Paul's Square is considerably quieter and cosier.
Here you will find mainly food and decoration stalls, but also a small car racing circuit.
In the adjacent Neue Kräme street, for example, I bought a great Bratwurst for 5 eur.
- ✅ A quieter setting just a few steps from the main market on the Römerberg
- ✅ Lots of food stalls
- ❌ Smaller selection of gifts and other goods
- Location on the map
Pink Christmas - Rosa Weihnachtsmarkt
The annual market on Holzgraben Square around the Weiße-Lilie-Brunnen fountain is unique.
The whole area, including trees and street lamps, is lit up in pink, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere.
However, you will find quite a few stalls here, which mainly focus on food and drink.
- ✅ Unique atmosphere thanks to the pink-lit trees
- ❌ A large number of people in a small space
- ❌ Small selection of stalls
- Location on the map
Roßmarkt
The popular Roßmarkt market is known for its live musical performances and various events.
It's on the edge of the historic centre and is backdropped by the skyline of the nearby financial centre.
The Roßmarkt in particular has food stalls.
- ✅ Cultural events and live performances
- ✅ Panorama of skyscrapers in the background
- ✅ A large area where the crowds can spread out more easily
- ❌ A small selection of gift stalls
- Location on the map
Hauptwache
The market I liked least was the one in Hauptwache, one of Frankfurt's main squares.
While you'll find lots of food stalls and children's attractions (like trains and carousels), the individual stalls are relatively far apart and the markets here feel a bit uncompact.
- ✅ Children's attractions
- ✅ The best langos of any Christmas market
- ❌ Uncompact environment
- ❌ The atmosphere is the least Christmassy
- Location on the map
CityAlm Weihnachtsmarkt
You'll discover a completely unique Christmas market on the roof of the Konstabler garage building in the city centre near the important Konstablerwache underground and train station.
- 🕙 Opening hours vary from day to day:
- 17:00-23:00 Monday to Wednesday
- 17:00-00:00 Thursday and Friday
- 14:00-00:00 Saturday
- 14:00-21:00 Sunday
- 📅 November 1 - December 23
- Official website: cityalm.de
Around 30 booths can be found right on the roof of the car park, offering beautiful views of the skyscraper skyline in Frankfurt's modern city centre.
In addition, there are two large indoor restaurants with a conservatory under a heated tarp.
The CityAlm Christmas Market is not very well signposted and is entered from the north side of the car park from Carl-Theodor-Reiffenstein-Platz, see map. Take the elevator up to the top floor, where an improvised staircase leads to the roof.
- ✅ Views of the Frankfurt skyline
- ✅ Unusual setting
- ✅ Two indoor heated restaurants
- ✅ Longer opening hours than the markets in the centre
- ❌ Tends to be crowded, especially on Fridays and Saturdays
- ❌ Quite difficult to navigate and poor signage
- Location on the map
Sachsenhäuser Weihnachtsmarkt am Goetheturm
If you want to experience a local Christmas market without the tourists and without the extreme crowds, head to the very edge of Frankfurt, which lies on the edge of a forest park below the 43-metre-high Goetheturm lookout tower.
The local market may be small, but you'll find several stalls selling food, mulled wine, as well as decorations and gifts.
- 🕙 Opening hours vary from day to day:
- 16:00-21:00 Monday to Thursday
- 16:00-22:00 Friday
- 13:00-22:00 Saturday
- 13:00-21:00 Sunday
- 📅 17 November - 21 December 2025
- Official website: sachsenhaeuser-weihnachtsmarkt.de
Even though the markets are more than 30 minutes away from the city centre by public transport, I probably liked them the most of all for their calm and homely atmosphere.
- ✅ Quiet local environment
- ✅ On the edge of a large forest park and under a lookout tower overlooking Frankfurt
- ❌ Away from the centre
- 🚌 Bus line 48 from Südbahnhof station
- Location on the map

At most stalls you can only pay with cash.
Some of the larger stalls also accept card payments, but there are very few of them, so cash is a must when visiting the Frankfurt Christmas Market!
What to watch out for - our tips
Pickpockets can be present at Christmas markets, so it's always a good idea to keep your wallet tightly secured or not to bring it at all and just carry cash or a card.
Please note that the Christmas markets are very crowded on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and if you can, make sure you go to Frankfurt between Monday and Thursday during Advent.
On weekends during December, accommodation in Frankfurt is up to 2x more expensive than on weekdays.
