Getting to Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt is located in the state of Hesse, roughly in the middle of Germany.

The city has one of the largest international airports in the world , Frankfurt FRA. It also serves as one of the largest railway hubs not only in Germany but in the whole of Europe.

Frequent bus connections are mainly provided by Flixbus, which mostly goes to cities in Germany and also to many places in France, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands or Switzerland.

By air

Frankfurt formally has two airports, but only one of them is actually close to the city.

For information about transport or slaves, please visit our website where we describe our own experiences at the airports:

  • Frankfurt FRA - one of the main European airports is about 11 km from Frankfurt city centre.
  • Frankfurt-Hahn HHN - a small low-cost airport located over 120 km from Frankfurt city centre

Where to buy tickets to Frankfurt

Frankfurt's main airport receives flights from all over the world, operated by dozens of airlines.

It's therefore worth comparing prices via flight search engines, which will compare all available offers.

Compare prices for flights to Frankfurt

The airline with the most flights is Lufthansa, which has its largest base in Frankfurt. However, flight prices are relatively high.

Often, the cheapest deals are offered by Condor, which flies to Frankfurt from several European capitals and many long-haul routes.

By train

Frankfurt is one of Germany's main rail crossroads.

High-speed trains and regular long-distance trains such as InterCity or EuroCity run to all corners of Germany, but also to places like Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Zurich or Basel.

The only company operating long-distance trains to Frankfurt is DB German Railways.

They always cooperate with local carriers when travelling abroad. So in practice, for example, when you travel by train to Paris, you will take the same train, which you can find on the German DB Railways website and the French OUI GO.

It is always worth comparing ticket prices on the websites of both carriers. They may each have different prices and different special offers, even though in reality you will always take the same train.

In Frankfurt, all trains always stop at the main station Frankfurt-Hauptbahnhof, which is located right in the city centre.

By bus

Bus transport is widespread in Germany and is a cheaper but less comfortable and slower alternative to trains.

Frankfurt is absolutely dominated by the carrier - Flixbus, which provides more than 98% of all connections. Ticket prices are flexible and vary considerably depending on the availability of a particular service.
