Palác Topkapi

Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace used to be the seat of government and the home of the Ottoman Sultan.

Don't expect one big palace, but a vast complex of courtyards, pavilions and gardens where you can easily spend half a day - and the perfect place for lots of photos (exteriors, views, details).

Between the palace walls you'll find the bedrooms of the Sultan and his family, extensive kitchens, harem, treasury and much more. During your tour of the palace and museums, you will soak up the atmosphere of the Ottoman Empire and learn about its history.

How long does it take to visit the palace?

Topkapi Palace is huge and a complete visit can take up to four hours, but most visitors will only need 2 to 3 hours to see the highlights.

I personally walked through Topkapi in 1.5 hours, but I skipped a lot of the interior or walked through it very quickly.

Is it worth visiting Topkapi Palace?

Yes, if:

  • you enjoy the combination of history + gardens + views
  • you want to visit one of Istanbul's top sights
  • you like to admire both interiors and exteriors (you can skip the interiors)
  • you are looking for a place where you can spend 2-4 hours in peace

❌ Not likely if:

  • you don't have time (Topkapi is large and dispersed)
  • you are not interested in history
  • you don't want to spend money on very expensive entrance fees

💡 Alternative:
Just a few minutes walk from here you will find the famous Blue Mosque, where the entrance is free.

Top attractions of Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace is huge and it's easy to lose track of which places are the most interesting and you should definitely pay attention to them during your visit. Don't miss the following points of interest:

1. courtyard - entrance area

  • more of a passageway than a main attraction
  • first contact with the area

2nd courtyard - the heart of the palace

  • former administrative centre
  • beautiful trees, space for the first big photo shoot
  • entrance to the harem

Harem

  • one of the most interesting parts
  • narrow corridors, decorated rooms, typical tiles
  • It feels much more authentic than the main halls.

3rd courtyard - private rooms

  • Audience Chamber (meeting place of the Sultan)
  • libraries and smaller pavilions

Treasury

  • Jewellery, thrones, weapons
  • the largest concentration of the "wow effect"

Terraces and views

  • one of the main reasons to visit
  • views of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn
  • ideal for photos (especially in good light)

Entrance fees and opening hours

Topkapi Palace is open every day except Tuesdays from 9:00 to 18:00, and in winter it is usually open until 17:00.

Topkapi Palace remains closed on Tuesdays.

Be prepared for the fact that ticket prices are very high and frankly shocked me.

I don't think I've ever paid so much for a monument of this type anywhere in the world.

  • 2 750 try - basic admission bought on the spot
    • valid for the entire site, including the Harem (many guides tell you that admission to the Harem is charged separately, but at least in 2026 this was no longer the case)
    • you also pay for the Aya Irini church (no point in going for me)
    • payment is possible by card and cash in Turkish lira
    • I didn't wait in line for 5 minutes, but in the summer season and on weekends the lines can be more than 30 minutes
  • 2 579 try - buying online through the official sales channel, which is GetYourGuide.com
    • skip the queue to buy tickets and you can save up to half an hour of time
    • buy tickets online at getyourguide.com

You can check the current opening hours and ticket prices on the website - muze.gen.tr/topkapi.

Accommodation at Topkapi Palace

There are a number of accommodation options in the area around Topkapi Palace.

If you choose to spend your stay in Istanbul in this area, you will be within walking distance of most of the major sights and plenty of restaurants and shops.

I would recommend these hotels:

  • Elasophia Hotel - a small hotel with lovely rooms, good ratings and a great price just a 10-minute walk from Topkapi
  • The Constantine Hotel - very cheap hotel with private bathroom in the room about 1,5 km from the palace
