Chumbe Island

Chumbe Island

Chumbe Coral Island was the first marine protected area in Tanzania and contains one of the richest and best preserved coral gardens in the world.

The island's name aptly sums up the understanding of the rich ecosystem as a living entity - it means being or creature. The coral growth on the shallow reef is among the densest in East Africa and the diversity of marine life in this area is fascinating.

Most of the island is covered in pristine forest, which contains a surprisingly diverse range of flora and fauna given the island's lack of a permanent source of groundwater. You can also take a walk along one of the trails through the forest or venture around the island at low tide to see the mangroves.

The island's landmark is a beautiful 34 metre high 5 storey lighthouse dating back to 1904.

Organised tours from Stone Town

Chumbe Island is a private island and a strictly protected sanctuary, so the number of organised tours is very limited - a maximum of 15 visitors are allowed per day.

A day trip with snorkelling, an island walk and lunch is one of the most expensive activities on Zanzibar and prices are around 260 usd.

The trip can only be booked through getyourguide.com.

Experience ecotourism at a unique resort

Right on Chumbe Island, you can stay at the unique eco-resort Chumbe Island Coral Park.

The resort has only 7 bungalows with a capacity of 2 people, so a maximum of 14 people can be accommodated on the island. All stays are all-inclusive and include a boat trip from Mbweni approximately 6km south of Stone Town centre and 1.5km from Zanzibar ZNZ airport.
