Bwejuu Beach

Bwejuu Beach

The beach north of the village of Bwejuu is highly regarded for its spaciousness.

As in the neighbouring resort of Paje, the sea recedes very far at low tide, so swimming is only possible at high tide. There are several spots in the vicinity that are ideal for snorkelling. Most hotels rent bicycles to their guests, either for free or for a nominal fee.

Beach facilities

The beach at Bwejuu is wide and very long, but compared to other east coast resorts such as Paje, Jambiani or Dongwe, it's much more local and there's a bit more litter.

There are also locals outnumbering tourists on the beach, but that's fine.

There are no amenities here, and even the snack vendors are significantly fewer than on the surrounding beaches.

The town of Bwejuu itself is very local and often looks untidy and dirty, on the other hand you will find a lot of very cheap street food outlets.

The best hotels by the beach

Bwejuu is mainly a resort for individual travellers, as travel agencies don't offer many holiday packages and tours here.

The town is ideal for those looking for a combination of a beach holiday and exploring the local life.

You'll find some very well rated hotels right on the beach, and prices tend to be slightly higher than in nearby resorts where there is more competition between hotels.

How to get there

If you will be travelling around Zanzibar by public transport (dala-dala buses), the following routes will get you to Bwejuu:

  • 340 - Michamwi, Dongwe, Paje, Zanzibar Town (Kwerekwe)
  • 630 - Michamwi, Dongwe, Paje, Jambiani, Makunduchi

Both routes run very frequently, on average once every 5-15 minutes.

There are not many regular taxis available in Bweju, so it's best to arrange a possible transfer through the hotel reception the day before.
