The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph is the largest historic building within Zanzibar's Stone Town.

Located right in the centre of the town, the 1893 building has two square towers that are just under 30 metres high.

The church was commissioned by French missionaries and the La Major Cathedral in Marseille, France, was used as a model. The Zanzibar one, however, is considerably smaller and less ornate.

Admission and opening hours

You can enter the cathedral for free during mass if you are a believer.

Otherwise, it is open to tourists from Monday to Saturday from 10:00-18:00.

Admission is 5 usd or 12 000 tzs and can be paid by card or cash.
