Portuguese Fortress with Amphitheatre

The Old Fort is one of the oldest structures in Zanzibar, built in the 17th century by Portuguese colonizers.

During the 18th century, the fort was rebuilt by the Omanis, who operated it as a prison and fortress in one. The original form has survived virtually to the present day.

It was not until the 1990s that an amphitheatre in the style of an ancient theatre was built inside the fort, where occasional events are held.

Inside the fortress there are many stalls selling clothes and souvenirs.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The Old Fort is accessible 24/7.

Admission is free and you can freely walk around the entire inner courtyard of the fort.
