If someone had shown me photos from Polanco without context, I probably wouldn't have described Mexico.

The modern buildings, upscale boutiques, world-class restaurants, and wide tree-lined streets create a very different atmosphere than the bustling historic center.

If you want to explore the richest part of Mexico City, start here.

Avenida Presidente Masaryk

The heart of the neighbourhood is Avenida Presidente Masaryk, often described as the most luxurious street in Latin America.

Here you'll find boutiques from the likes of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier and Tiffany & Co., as well as many cafés, restaurants and modern galleries.

Even if you're not planning on shopping, it's worth walking at least a few blocks to soak up the atmosphere of this part of town.

Masaryk Avenue is nicknamed 5. Avenue of Mexico.

But what surprised us - and we certainly didn't see this on 5th Avenue, the Champs-Elysées, or the Ginza - was the rather large concentration of car shops.

What's the atmosphere like?

Unlike the historic centre, Polanco feels very tidy and European.

Here, I didn't feel like I was walking around a giant Latin American metropolis at all.

In places, the atmosphere is more reminiscent of modern Madrid or Miami.

While we didn't really like Avenida Presidente Masaryk itself, the side streets were better.

Either pleasantly quiet, or on the contrary, full of restaurants, taquerías or the best churros shop in town - El Morro!

Is a hotel in Polanco worth it?

If you prefer a safe, clean, tidy (but a little sterile) neighbourhood, then Polanco is a good choice.

Just be warned, Polanco is only easily accessible by Uber or taxi.

For metro trips, Roma Norte, Reforma or the historic center are more efficient.
