Sardinia has a Mediterranean subtropical climate. Summers are hot and dry, whilst winters tend to be damp and mild. In summer, temperatures often exceed 30 °C and can even rise above 38 °C during heatwaves.

Sardinia is one of the sunniest parts of the Mediterranean and is often reported to have around 300 days of sunshine a year. However, you are most likely to enjoy sunny and dry weather from June to August.

For most travellers, the swimming season runs from the second half of June until the end of September. June and September offer the best balance between weather, sea temperature, prices and tourist numbers.

In May, it’s usually warm enough for sunbathing, but the sea is only around 18 °C. In the first half of October, on the other hand, you can still go for a swim, but the weather isn’t as reliable as in summer.

Does the weather differ between the north and south of Sardinia?

Although Sardinia is a relatively large island, the temperature differences between the north and south coasts are not dramatic. Wind, altitude and the orientation of a particular beach often play a greater role than the location itself.

Southern Sardinia, around Cagliari, Villasimius and Chia, tends to be statistically slightly drier. In spring and autumn, you’re slightly more likely to experience warm weather here than in the north.

Northern Sardinia, around Olbia, the Costa Smeralda and the La Maddalena archipelago, has similar summer temperatures but is more exposed to the mistral. The wind can significantly change conditions on the beach and the state of the sea in the space of a single day.

The west coast around Alghero is generally windier and the sea here is more often rough.

The east coast around Cala Gonone and the Gulf of Orosei may be better sheltered from north-westerly winds.

Inland and in the Gennargentu mountain range, temperatures are significantly lower. Snow may fall on the highest peaks from December to March, and the weather here changes much more quickly than by the sea.

Wind in Sardinia: when does the mistral blow?

The mistral is a dry north-westerly wind that can affect Sardinia at any time of year. It tends to be more frequent and stronger during the cooler half of the year, but it also occurs in the middle of summer.

You’ll feel it most on the north and west coasts. The mistral brings clear skies and fresher air, but at the same time it can cause high waves, disruptions to boat trips or less comfortable swimming.

On a windy day, therefore, the sea may be rough in the west, whilst on the east or south coasts you’ll find a calm cove. Having your own car is an advantage, as it allows you to adjust your plans according to the current forecast.

When does it rain the most in Sardinia?

The rainiest part of the year usually lasts from October to February, with November statistically seeing the most rainfall. Conversely, the driest month is July, when it rains only very rarely on the coast.

Rain often takes the form of showers, with the sky clearing quickly in between. However, particularly in autumn, there can also be violent thunderstorms and intense rain lasting several hours. It is therefore not possible to rely on every shower being short and harmless.

Here’s what the weather is like in Sardinia month by month. The temperatures given represent typical daily highs on the coast, not a guaranteed forecast for a specific date.

Weather in January

January is one of the coldest months. Daytime temperatures on the coast hover around 14 to 15 °C, whilst in the evening they can drop to 6 to 9 °C.

Rain falls on an average of 6 to 7 days, mostly in the form of showers. You should also expect wind and sudden changes in the weather.

January is a good time to explore towns, villages and archaeological sites. There may be snow in the highest parts of the mountains, and, conditions permitting, the small Bruncu Spina ski resort may open. However, never plan a trip without checking the current conditions first.

Weather in February

The weather in February is similar to that in January. Typical daytime temperatures range from 14 to 15 °C, and the sea, at around 13 to 14 °C, is at its coldest of the whole year.

Rain falls on around 5 to 6 days, though this can vary significantly from year to year. The coast tends to be windy, whilst the inland areas are green and there may still be snow in the mountains.

February is also interesting thanks to the carnivals held in Sardinian towns and villages. The dates vary each year, so it is advisable to plan your trip according to the specific programme.

Weather in March

Sardinian spring begins in March. Daytime temperatures rise to 16–17 °C and can even exceed 20 °C on sunny days.

The sea remains cold, at around 14 °C. However, the countryside is a fresh green and in full bloom, whilst you’ll hardly come across any tourists at the main attractions.

March can be windy along the coast, so it’s better suited to a flexible road trip than to staying in one place. When planning mountain hikes, be prepared for mud, lower temperatures and changeable weather.

Weather in April

In April, typical daytime temperatures range from 18 to 20 °C, but can rise significantly higher in sunny weather.

Spring showers still occur, but they usually don’t last the whole day. The sea is only 15 to 16 °C and is still too cold for a classic beach holiday.

April is one of the best months for hiking and cycling. It isn’t too hot, the countryside is green, and it’s lovely to go for a walk, for example, around the Gola Su Gorropu canyon.

Weather in May

May is perfect for hiking, cycling and travelling across the island. Typical daytime temperatures range from 22 to 24 °C, but during warm spells they can rise to as high as 28 °C.

It only rains occasionally, and you’ll spend most days outdoors. You can sunbathe comfortably on the beaches, but the sea is around 18 °C, which most travellers will still find too cold for a long swim.

The advantage of May is the half-empty beaches and lower prices than during the summer holidays. However, not all seasonal resorts, restaurants and boat trips are operating at full capacity.

Weather in June

June brings proper summer weather. Daytime temperatures reach 27 to 28 °C, rain is rare and the days are the longest of the whole year.

The sea temperature rises to around 22 °C during the month. Whilst the start of June is more suited to hardy swimmers, the swimming season really gets going from the middle of the month onwards.

June is one of the best months for a seaside holiday. The beaches and roads aren’t yet as crowded as they are in July and August, yet practically all hotels, restaurants and boat trips are already up and running.

Weather in July

July is a typical summer month, when the season is in full swing. Usual daytime highs hover around 30 to 31 °C, though during heatwaves temperatures can exceed 38 °C.

Rain is extremely rare and most days are sunny. The sea is around 23 to 24 °C, offering excellent conditions for swimming and snorkelling.

Availability is quickly running out at the most popular beaches, car hire companies and on boat trips. You should therefore book a trip to La Maddalena, Cala Luna or other secluded beaches in advance.

Weather in August

August is the hottest and busiest month. Daytime temperatures range from around 30 to 32 °C, but can rise above 40 °C during heatwaves.

The sea is at its warmest of the year, averaging 24 to 25 °C. It can be slightly warmer in shallow coves, but it doesn’t usually reach the same temperatures as the air.

The biggest rush comes around the Ferragosto holiday on 15 August. Hotels, car hire and boat trips tend to be fully booked, and prices are at their highest for the whole year. You should therefore book your August accommodation several months in advance.

Weather in September

September offers summer weather with more pleasant temperatures than during the holiday season. Daily highs typically range from 26 to 28 °C, and extreme heat is less likely.

The sea is still lovely and warm at 23 to 24 °C. The first half of September in particular offers excellent conditions for a beach holiday, swimming and boat trips.

The likelihood of showers and thunderstorms gradually increases, though most days remain sunny. Along with June, September offers the best balance between weather, water temperature, prices and the number of tourists.

Weather in October

During the first half of October, you can enjoy warm days and, weather permitting, a swim. Daily highs usually range between 22 and 24 °C, and the sea is around 21 to 22 °C.

However, October is no longer a reliable month for a traditional summer holiday. There is increasing rain and wind, as well as periods of several days with changeable weather. The difference between individual weeks and years can be significant.

October is ideal for a mix of day trips, sightseeing, hiking and swimming, depending on the current conditions. Having your own car allows you to head to the coast wherever it’s not windy or raining at the moment.

Weather in November

November is statistically the rainiest month in Sardinia. Daytime temperatures nevertheless reach a pleasant 18 to 19 °C, and there may be sunny spells between showers.

The sea is around 19 °C, tempting mainly hardy swimmers to take a dip. Evenings tend to be cool and windy.

November is ideal for exploring towns, enjoying the local cuisine and visiting archaeological sites. Walking tours are possible but require a flexible itinerary. Many beach resorts, restaurants and seasonal ferry services are usually closed by this time.

Weather in December

Daytime temperatures on the coast in December range from around 14 to 16 °C. Expect wind, showers and short days, but also sunny spells suitable for walks and day trips.

In the mountains, temperatures can drop below freezing and snow may appear on the highest peaks. Always check the latest road and weather conditions before travelling to Punta La Marmora.

December is ideal for a city break, sampling the local cuisine and exploring Sardinia without the crowds. However, the seaside resorts feel rather sleepy and many seasonal businesses remain closed.

Sea temperatures in Sardinia and when to go for a swim

The sea in Sardinia warms up more slowly than the air. Warm May weather therefore doesn’t automatically mean pleasant swimming.

The average sea temperature during the main part of the season is roughly as follows:

• May – 18 °C
• June – 22 °C
• July – 23 to 24 °C
• August – 24 to 25 °C
• September – 23 to 24 °C
• October – 21 to 22 °C

For most travellers, the sea is pleasant from the second half of June until the end of September. Hardier swimmers also bathe in May and October.

Shallow, sheltered coves may be slightly warmer than the open coast in places. However, the water temperature is affected by the wind, currents and the weather over the previous few days, so higher temperatures cannot be guaranteed.
