Schöner Brunnen

Schöner Brunnen

The Schöner Brunnen, translated as "Beautiful Fountain", is one of the most famous landmarks and a symbol of Nuremberg. The fountain, with its 19-metre high Gothic column, can be found in the central Hauptmarkt square, where, among other things, the famous Christmas markets are held.

History and shape of the fountain

The beautiful fountain was built between 1385 and 1396 by Heinrich Beheim. ,

It has been restored several times over the centuries, but still retains its original form. It even survived the bombing of Nuremberg during the Second World War unscathed because it was enclosed in a concrete sarcophagus.

The fountain is decorated with a column in the shape of the tower of Gothic churches, which is decorated with 40 coloured and gilded figures. They symbolise the world view of the Holy Roman Empire, of which Nuremberg was one of the main centres for many decades.
