Metro in Nuremberg

Old Town

The Nuremberg Metro serves passengers on 3 lines that cross not only the historic city centre. In total, the metro system has 51 stations that are perfect for travelling within the city centre, to the outskirts of the city or even to the airport.

In German, the classic metro is referred to as the "U-Bahn" and this is no different in Nuremberg.

Interestingly, Nuremberg is the smallest city in Germany with its own classic underground metro system.

Where to buy metro tickets?

There are three ways to buy tickets for public transport in Nuremberg:

  • on the website shop.vgn.de - you can print out the ticket or show it to a potential checker on your mobile phone (can be downloaded from an email in .pdf format, for example)
  • via the VGN mobile app (available on Google Play / App Store)
  • at the vending machines at all metro stations and most tram stops

If you buy single tickets, there is always a lower price online or in the mobile app.

How to use metro tickets?

Metro stations don't have turnstiles, so if you've bought your ticket via the mobile app or the web, you don't have to worry. Just show the ticket on your mobile phone or printed on paper to the ticket inspector when you're checked.

If you buy paper tickets, you must mark them in the red machines before entering the platform.

U-Bahn metro lines

Nuremberg has 3 classic underground lines (U-Bahn):

  • U1 (blue) - runs from west to east through the main station and the historic centre (Lorenzkirche station) and reaches Fürth.
  • U2 (red) - runs north-south through the city centre and also goes to Nuremberg Airport
  • U3 (light green) - the shortest line is horseshoe-shaped and also runs north-south through the centre

Lines U2 and U3 run on a common route and tracks throughout the centre.

The metro runs from about 4:40 to about 0:30. Intervals are between 6 and 10 minutes during the day, and 8 to 12 minutes on weekends.

Metro stations are always marked with a white "U" in a blue box.

S-Bahn Nürnberg

In addition to the underground, trams and buses, you can also use all regional trains (RE and RB) and the suburban railway (S-Bahn) as part of the Nuremberg public transport system.

The railways are mainly used for fast transfers in the west-east axis from Fürth through the west of Nuremberg, the main station to the areas east of Nuremberg (Hartmannsdorf, Feucht, Amberg and others).

Trains and the S-Bahn are subject to the same tickets as other public transport. You must always mark them in the validator before boarding the train. Red markers are usually placed before you enter the platform itself.
