Kiek in de Kök

How much in the Kök

This 5-storey high defensive tower with cannons now serves as a military museum and you can take a walk along the 2 km long city walls or, on the contrary, underground, in the intricate labyrinth of medieval passages under the city.

If you're amused by the name of the tower, it literally means "peek into the kitchen" - it is said that from here you could see into the kitchens of the surrounding 15th century town houses thanks to their wide chimneys.

Walk the walls

The entrance to the wooden footbridge along part of the city walls is in the Neitsitorn tower.

Not all of the walls are accessible, but only about 600 metres. From here, however, you can enjoy beautiful views of parts of Tallinn, including St Olaf's Tower and St Nicholas Church.

Tower and Bastion Museum

At various points within the walls you will find the extensive Tallinn Fortification Museum, including underground passages, bastions and four towers - Kiek in de Kök, Maiden Tower, Gate Tower and Marstal Tower.

A visit to the entire site including all parts of the museum will take approximately 1 hour.

The different parts are relatively small and you will see mainly historical military objects.

Entrance fees and opening times

During the summer season, the whole complex of the ramparts is open every day, while between October and April it is open every day except Mondays.

Opening hours are 10:00-18:00 all year round.

Admission to all areas is free with the Tallinn Card. If you do not have a Tallinn Card, you will pay the following prices:

  • Walking the walls only - 4 eur
  • The whole museum - 16 eur
  • 4 towers only - 12 eur
