Division of Cyprus
The island of Cyprus is divided into a southern "Greek" part, which is the generally recognized state and the subject of this entire guide, and a northern Turkish part, officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. While the latter is considered a separate state, it is recognised only by Turkey. 'Southern' Cyprus regards this situation as a Turkish occupation of its territory.
There is no problem for EU travellers to cross the Cyprus-Cyprus border back and forth, even with just an ID card (see the chapter"Travel documents to Cyprus" for details).
Geography
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily and Sardinia.
It is dominated by the Troodos Mountains, which are located inland. The largest mountain is Mount Olympus, which is 1,952 metres high, and you can ski here in winter.
Cyprus has a large number of old original villages that have retained their face for many centuries. These villages have retained many old and original customs that are sure to captivate you.
In the west of Cyprus is the Akamas Peninsula National Park, which offers an incredible spectacle of beautiful cliffs and pebbly sea. In the east of the country are the popular tourist destinations of Ayia Napa and Protaras, which attract large numbers of tourists from all over the world.
Cyprus is home to 4 major cities.
Nicosia - The capital is located inland and is divided into two parts, Greek and Turkish. Nicosia is a major financial and commercial centre and you will find many world renowned companies here. The most popular sport is football and APOEL Nicosia is a team that is known throughout Europe.
Limassol - Lying on the southern coast, on which we find the largest port in Cyprus. It is the second largest city and has been announced as the third largest city in the world with promising ambitions. Here we find a magnificent promenade lined with palm trees with beautiful views of the sea. In the month of February, be sure to visit the world-famous Carnival, which lasts for several days, and you will have a lot of fun. If you're a lover of nightlife and endless partying, make sure to visit the Guaba Beach Bar, which is right on the beach, during the summer months.
Larnaca - The city with the largest airport and the third largest city in Cyprus. There is a salt lake here that is full of water in winter and you can see flocks of flamingos, they stay here from November to March.
Paphos - The city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its many ancient remains, became a Capital of Culture in 2017. Located in the southwest of the island, highlights include an archaeological park where we can see the remains of Greek and Roman cities. A few kilometres from the city is the birthplace of the Greek goddess Aphrodite (Petra tou Romiou). Paphos can be reached either directly by air or via Intercity Buses from Larnaca, Limassol or Nicosia.
