Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu)

The popularity of Red Sand Beach aka Kaihalulu Beach is evident at first glance. The beach is covered with a very exotic red coloured sand, which is unique in the world.
Beaches with black or golden sand are more common, but there are not many beaches with red sand in the world ( Kokkkini Beach in Santorini, Greece, for example).
The sand is deep red, contrasting with the deep blue water, black sea wall and green trees on the shore. The rock walls behind the beach are steadily eroding, slowly making the bay larger. It is these iron-rich rocks that cause the colouration of the beach.
Red Sand Beach is partially protected from the rough ocean by a natural sea cliff wall located about 50 metres from the shore, which protects the bay from large waves. Either way, swimming here is definitely not recommended and is very dangerous due to the strong currents!
How to get there
Red Sand Beach is located just outside the village of Hana, literally a few meters behind the last houses.
However, due to its location under high rock overhangs, the short path is quite dangerous or requires great care and sturdy shoes. The path is about 200 metres long and has an elevation gain of about 50 metres and follows a narrow path above the cliffs.
